So clarify something for me:
This part of the review seems to be talking about changes to the dub only, but the business about "would never be allowed in the States" makes me wonder. Is the dialogue about the girl accurately subbed, or is it altered there as well? I guess I'm just not understanding why the change would be "necessary" only in the dub. |

The English dub to this to anime is terrible. The Scripting .. Voice Acting and Voice Directing are all very low quality. The Reviewer has little to know understanding of anime and what it means to be a fan if he found the english dub better then the original version.

Geez, that sounds elitest.
And besides isn't the point of this anime to laugh at the jokes. If the dub said whatever what's on a properly translated script, it's more likely the jokes will fall flat. |

And that was exactly my point with the "your momma had an outie" business. What's the point of translating an insult literally if 98% of the likely viewers aren't going to get it?
BeyonzerZ, I guess we'll have to just disagree on this one, then. Frankly, I think anyone who can't see the quality of this dub job is the one that has the problem, but that's just my opinion.
Yes, the references are there in the subtitles - not an unusual thing, actually, since the FUNi dub of Gunslinger Girls dropped the Snow White and Seven Dwarves references (presumably due to copyright concerns) but still mentioned them in the subtitles. And no, I'm not sure why they deleted them from one but not the other; didn't make sense to me, either. |

Especially since Eric Vale/Johnson, who wrote the script for Desert Punk, also directed the wonderful Case Closed dub and the Gunslinger Girl dub, another series that you gave favorable reviews to, am I correct?

From the looks of this, it might be that Eric was making a "tv dub" should FUNi decide to air Desert Punk on their network (The FUNimation Channel) or possibly Cartoon Network in the future. |

I believe that all FUNimation DVDs are the same in that the "Top Menu" button must be pressed in order to access the main menu when the DVD first loads. I just tried the button on Sunabouzu DVD 1 and it brought up the main menu. The opening adverts can be skipped this way. |

Another trick that's worked for me on Kodocha DVDs is to hit "Display" and toggle to some other title if the disc won't let me go to the menu directly. It might take you into an episode or into an extra feature, but from there you can easily get to the menu. |

While the dub was funny, it was a shame that some of the dialogue that was written did not make it because of the girl's age. The English version in some places does not make sense because of this in ep. 4 imo. Also, some dialogue changes to ep. 1 in the English version was funnier in the sub version imo.
(Especially "Your momma has an outie!") If there is a different meaning to this phrase, could someone please explain it? It's also a pity that the OP and ED songs were translated into English, though the overall feel was kept intact. In the case of the ED song, some references to the woman with the assets were removed. The lewd language used in the English version totally excludes it from Cartoon Network imo. Prob not Adult Swim fodder either because of the type of fanservice (male and female) and constant references to one of the character's assets imo. |

The "outie" phrase is sort of a lame, semi-childish insult. It means she has a belly button that sticks outward. I think a good English (American English at least) equivalent might be, "Your mom wears combat boots!"

Thanks Tomato. That was the only interpretation I knew. So no earth shattering insult. FUNi really took that one up 10,000x in the dub!

yes...I know this thread has been dead for a long time.
but it's really burning within me to add to this. The fact that the antagonist in episode one spoiler[completely freaked] to the "your momma has an outtie" (an obviously lame insult) made it even funnier considering the bashing that he himself received in the rest of the letter. |
