Uhm, under Scrapped Princess the press release says this:

Written by Ichiro Sakaki and inspired by the successful anime series,

I thought the anime was based on the novels?

Anyway, good to see that this series is actually coming. It's seemed dead for what, two years?

As did I, I could have sworn as well that the Novels inspired the Manga adptation that then inspired the charture digians that we see in the Anime.

I hope to God that their translation of Kino's Journey isn't as bad as their work on .hack...

So I guess we're going to see more Japanese Light Novels over here. Maybe they'll get Haruhi (probably not)!

I don't understand. Why is that bad?? That makes no sense to me. What does it matter if they call it by it's American or Japanese name. Still the same story right?
Or are you trying to be oddly sarcastic?
I'm just really excited to finally be able to read the books. Now if only they would do the 12 Kingdoms novels as well.

Tokyopop has done some star work with titles like B't X, King of Bandit Jing and the Slayers novels.

Unfortunately, they've also done their fair share of garbage. It seems that they have a foaming Japanophile maniac on their hands who regards the English language as too mundane for his concern. You can see his work throughout Tokyopop's .hack releases, full of untranslated random Japanese and inconsistencies with the established, official translations. It makes my stomach hurt to think that this moron is going to be doing the translations for the next wave of .hack manga and novels. Anime hyper#

Calling it "Kino no Tabi" is evidence that, once again, they've got an idiot on the job who would render the entire freakin' thing in pure romanized Japanese if he had the chance. I'm excited that we're getting the original Kino's Journey novels in English, but don't expect the translation to be readable.

Would you mind elaborating on some of the problems with the .hack novel translations? I do recall something about the second novel's translation seeming odd to me, as a reader unfamiliar with the original version of the work, but I can't remember what it was now. Maybe it was just something like the poor spelling and grammar that plagued several of the later Slayers novels.

I didn't notice a "poor" translation in the first .Hack novel, but the second one was just so gosh-darn awful I couldn't even finish it. (I don't think TP had anything to do with it being bad, it was just the plot of it that stunk. Does the volume 1 story really need a retelling? After you know how it ends, there's just no fun in it.)

I did notice some untranslated words in the Gravitation novel, though. I think they were calling the ceiling by the Japanese word, to keep some stupid pun "intact". I'm a big Gravitation fan, but this book was just Terrible with a capital "T". It didn't introduce anything new to the series, and it was so sappy and poorly written it felt like I was reading a fanfiction on some girl's livejournal.

I hope Tokyopop can get their hands on some better writers, let alone translators, before they pick up something I actually really want to read (like Haruhi or Maru ma.)

But it isn't being changed. Kino no Tabi and Kino's Journey are the same name, just in different languages. The only change is the change of language to Englsih, the language used in America, which happens to be the country that they're bringing this book to. An average American Joe isn't going to know what the hell "Kino No Tabi" is.
