I don't think Yu-Gi-Oh would get a video game sales record.

To my knowledge, Mario Bros. 3 had sold well over 20 million copies in its day. As far as I remember, that record still stands.

It was just what I was thinking as well. Magic the Gathering is the reason why Yu-Gi-Oh! and other CCGs exist today. I wonder if Kazuki Takahashi plays Magic the Gathering. Magic the Gathering has about 6 million players worldwide. How many players does Yu-Gi-Oh! have?

20 million units of the game or 20 million units included with the bundle? The ones with the bundle is a bit tricky. Some say it counts towards a game and console sold, some say it counts only as a console sold. I still remember my parents getting me the Super Mario Bros. 3 bundle back in the old days.

I have a very hard time believing one Yugioh game sold 17.5 million copies?

Halo 2 and Final Fantasy X combined haven't sold that many copies.

In terms of cards sold, I'm sure Garbage Pail Kids is the champ. Laughing

In terms of cards sold, wouldn't normal playing cards be champ? You know like the ones you play poker and blackjack with.

I wouldn't be surprised if he did. Yu-gi-oh, I believe, originally showcased lots of different gaming, including tabletop RPG's but that didn't last long.

Not playing cards, but ¨Coolectible Card Games¨. There is a huge difference. You buy 1 pack of cards, you get all 52 plus 2 jokers and some rule cards. Buit with Yu-Gi-Oh, you have to buy pack after pack until you get the card you want.... or go broke.

Magic popped up to my head too when I read they were going for the card world record. Maybe the record for an anime-based card game...

From what I've heard, Kazuki-san originally created Duel Monsters because he wanted to create a simplier version of Magic The Gathering, but as the Yugioh card game grew in popularity, the game started to become more complex, but this is Wikipedia where I read this info from, so take it with a grain of salt.

Actually, the original Super Mario Bros. would go as the best selling videogame in history at 40 million sold. And Yu-Gi-Oh definitely wouldn't go down as best selling game based on a card game, Pokemon would easily take that record. So I don't really know what they're applying for.
Edit: In all honesty though, Guiness records are in many ways unrelyable. I mean, they have a record for most episodes in a primetime TV show (which the Simpsons has something like 300 episodes), yet there is no record for actual most episodes ever in a TV show. We all know that there are tonnes of other shows (like anime) that have more episodes than the Simpsons. I'm not saying an anime show like Detective Conan or Pokemon has the most episodes ever (I'm sure some soap opera would overythrow them), but why the hell do you have to be Primetime in order get a record?! That is just BS.

Which game? There are tons of Yugioh video games. I still have my Gameboy Color one. (Which is honestly the WORST game I have ever played. The basic premise of it is to take cards out of your hand and put them on the table, and watch them disappear when they are "defeated". There's no strategy to it at all. The monsters don't even "come to life" like in the TV show.)

Almos 16 billion is a wazoo load of cards. The Simpsons aren't the longest running primetime animated show. Jeez, Guinness? Ever hear of Sazae-san? It has over 1700 3 7-minute episodes since Oct. '69 to total over 5500 episodes. That's over 7x more Simpsons.

I'm thinking some soap that's been running for decades would have the most episodes Laughing But Guiness doesn't just put things in the book anymore, you have to apply and I guess some people can't be bothered to. But that's beside the point...
