Wow, for a show to be on the air that long, and to say you are bad at your job. Anyway you look at it, she must of had more issues than what she let on.

Very sad.

Holy crap.

I used to watch Ojaru Maru all the time when I worked as a JET in Kagoshima -- it comes on around 5:00 on the NHK kids channel. It is funny, and the plots were easily understood by someone like me who knew absolutely no Japanese. (I now understand enough to realize that the title character's odd dialect is still indecipherable by me...)

If this lady's job was to make a show that is enjoyable for all ages, there's no way she was doing poorly at it...

Each episode is just 10 minutes -- perfect for getting the point/joke/story across without having to pad things out. In addition to the typical "dealing w. everyday life" stuff, they'd do Japanese folk tales in "twisted fairy tale theater" style...

Wow. Just...wow. I hope she's at peace now.

How sad. I have a friend who's not suicidal but is similar in other ways; she's WONDERFUL at what she does (act) but she's always declaring herself to be terrible. It drives me nuts because she's deaf to praise and encouragement. Still, she doesn't link her life's worth so totally to her gig; she knows that her marriage, her friendships, her church are all part of what makes her life worthwhile.

How unfortunate. Depression is an illness that crosses all cultural, racial, and economic barriers. Even someone who is so sucessful and creative can't get past the overwhelming feeling that they, their life, and work is unworthy of existence. What a terrible thing to suffer.

Like I said in the other one, sad and terrible. It's even worse with the fact that she thought she was doing a poor job at what she was doing, which in reality was a funny popular series, running since 98'. How much better can it get than that? People try to make series and they might only get 2 volumes if their manga goes down.

Yeah, a lot of people reading this probably thought "how could she POSSIBLY think she wasn't good at her job when she's created something so hugely successful?" I mean, in an industry where most shows end after six months, having something on the air for eight years is a hell of an accomplishment. But of course, one of the things depression does best is cut through all logic and reason. All the external evidence of her success was probably trumped in her mind by some tiny flaws here or there that she focused on. Depression does that. It's a real tragedy.

I terrible sorry to hear about this, my thoughts go out to the family and friends during this most terrible event. It's so hard to lose someone like this, I remember after my cousin did it my family has never been the same since.

My GOD!!! That's horrible! Shocked Shocked Shocked

One can never knew what goes on in the hearts of people. Even if they are told that things are fine they still can't see it because of the problems they hold inside. And again dealing with Japanese society no one talks about their problems.

It's really very sad. Sad Though I cannot agree that death is only the solution to these types of problems of when one feels he or she cannot gain more out of life.

This is beyond sad. To be so creative and yet to plunged to such an end.

I, too, used to watch Ojarumaru while on JET . . it was just one of the cutest shows on TV that sadly no one outside Asia will ever see, and I used to hum the enka opening song all the time in the staff room. You see the characters everywhere, it was just as popular as Anpanman and was gonna go on forever . . so I don't know what gave her the idea that she wasn't doing a great job. But anyway, very sad news . . RIP.
