Though this is not true anime, it is very well done and a favorite of mine (and my kids). They took a lot of care to clone some of the more dominate features of anime but kept it very "americanized" as far as context. Overall it's an excellent cartoon. Glad to see it getting more exposure.

it seems like they should have done this a long time ago. i have yet to watch any of the second season. i'm waiting for it to finish.

Ah, yes, Avatar, the plot of which centers around a young boy - I can't remember his name, but it begins with an A - in his journey to travel the world and master the elements. Mastering these elements usually involves a fight of some sort with the master of their respective styles. The boy is not alone in his journey, however: he is joined by a girl who specializes in the element of water, and a youth who, while putting on a show of being mature, tends to foll easily for women. The boy is also joined by his fuzzy animal companions.
Their journey is not without challengers, of course. As the group travels the world, they often find themselves in the middle of a city's conflict, and need to find a peaceful resolution to their problem before continuing on their way. In addition to that, there is an organization which is constantly attempting to capture them that also has plans for conquering the entire world. To conquer the challenges ahead of him, the boy must learn baluable lessons or trust and friendship, and can always depend on his friends to help him if he is in need. Great show, that one. |

Do I detect sarcasm? : P Well, hey, Fullmetal Alchemist does nothing new with the shounen-action-drama genre, yet it's huge right now (and pretty good, too). Avatar is good. It is like a tasty cake, or something. |

That's...not really an accurate description. You make it sound like an episode of Pokemon. ^^; Aang is traveling to master the elements so he could save the world ravaged by war with the Fire Nation. From the very beginning, there are themes of murder and genocide. It's rather dark for a cartoon, though it manages to remain lighthearted and kid-friendly (most of the time). Also, he doesn't need to fight or defeat his masters, but the learning of techniques require time and discipline, just like martial arts (which the bending styles are based on). Unfortunately, he doesn't have much time... And then there's Zuko, the foil and anti-hero, who's got a subplot of his own and impressive character development. But that'd take another few paragraphs and be rather spoilery, so I'll just end my rambling by saying that I agree with everyone else.  It's a great show, better than a lot of anime I've seen.

Of all things in Avatar that remind me of anime, its Zuko. He brings that I-hate-the-world-so-im-going-to-blow-it-up teenage angst(sp?) that you see all the time in anime. It so fun

Kilgamayan, have you seen a single episode of Avatar or are you one of those snarky otakus who think everything from the west is a ripoff of some anime?
Pokemon is nothing like Avatar with the exception of the main characters are children on a journey. Pokemon is all surface. It's Saturday morning for the kid set. It's let's see if we can make a few new Pokemon in order to sell some toys. It's fluff. It's fun. Avatar is a different creature. There's a history, complete with politcal and religious structures. The writers went out of their way to create a realistic world. Like someone said before, each form of air bending is based on a real world martial art, each bending tribe has it's own culture which again, are based on real world cultures (The Fire Bending nation is based on the Chinese, the Earth Benders are Japanese, the Water benders are Inuits and the Air Benders are combination of Indian/Tibentan), even the written language is based on ancient Chinese, how is that anything like Pokemon? |
