Despite leaning in a more serious direction, My-Hime still resists the urge to become too serious.

I think this is the last volume you'll be able to say this.

Some may lament the nearly incomprehensible “Engrish” of Alyssa’s theme song, but its base melody is still a great tune which becomes a recurring musical theme throughout the first three episodes.

I love Alyssa's "It's Only the Fairy Tale" in all its Engrish glory.

I can't wait to hear your opinion of the remaining volumes.

The awkward transition between episodes 15 and 16 is a bigger trouble spot, as it feels like the writers couldn’t come up with a decent logical progression for how a character apparently lost at the end of 15 winds up back in the story at the beginning of 16 as if nothing happened, so they didn’t bother to try to explain it.

That also quite bothered me and it seemed that the writers attempted to dodge that question by the humor that abruptly followed, a little flashback to how that character managed to survive would've been a nice touch.

Overall, those were quite touching episodes, can't wait till the next volume.

Got the disc today, as Rightstuf kindly combined a few other orders in with the massive 25-disc Geneon order Anime smile

*agrees with both points* This volume is quite the evil cliffhanger for all those poor unfortunate souls who, uh, you know, buy their anime legally Embarassed The transition was a tad awkward IIRC (I've only watched episodes 13-14 of the DVD so far, while cutting scads of plastic wrapping), and episode 16 is a little strange because you know that it's a 26-episode series, and you know that they've got to come up with something better to conclude the series. (After all, I'm sure no series wants to be like Maze, a 25-episode series that hits its best dramatic peak in episode 9...)

It also includes significant character development and one of the more touching sequences in the series to date, and not from the source you’d expect. By the time it’s done a couple of characters who hadn’t seemed especially likeable before may arouse much greater sympathy.
I also love "It's Only The Fairy Tale" as a musical anchor for Alyssa and this Searrs arc, and that sequence at the end of episode 15...though it certainly wasn't the first or the last time I shed tears over this series, it really stood out as a well-done sequence--I'm looking forward to seeing how the dub handles it, as I've liked Alyssa and Miyu's VAs so far.
Still, would it have killed Bandai to subtitle that song, since it is pretty hard to understand? And also, would it have killed them to subtitle some written text spoiler[Natsuki Kuga's name on the big ribbon] that actually is relevant to the plot and the conversation that Yukino and Haruka are having? I know, I know, the companies have a lot of work to do, and they don't want to go through the effort and extra subtitle timing work of making those silly ribbons comprehensible to their target audience of the hiragana-impaired. But if they're not willing, we all know who is Rolling Eyes

The box description is also a bit weird... "Fuuka Academy is abuzz with romance as the Tamayura festival approaches and even Mai has a date for the festival with Reito." So, lots of girls have a date with Reito, and even Mai, with her closed-off ways, has a date with him as well? And finally,

Mai still looks really good regardless of whether she’s in school uniform, a yukata, or cosplay outfit. Even Shihu(sic) finally finds a look that’s appealing on her.
Looks like "rabble" was wrong after all. Laughing

That Ocean Group’s Blue Waters Studios has pulled in a lot of new and relatively inexperienced talent for the expansive cast of this dub shows in weaker performances of some other roles,

Keep in mind that chinook animation (the one of blue water's recording studios at which My-Hime is being dubbed ), at best, has fifty actors total. Also, givin the ammount of work they're given (32 series (plus video games) in total since 1999 is only about four or five projects a year). Considering that, to stack up as a B- compared to the B given to the sub, even if there are some weak proformances, it's quite an accomplishment.

Considering just what is in store for the HiMES, I find the cosplay karaoke scene to be heartbreakingly tragic..... Crying or Very sad
