REVIEW: Jinki:Extend DVD 2

I didn't watch my copy of Vol.#2 yet, but this is what most people told me when I asked about this show that the story started to take a nosedive around the middle of the series. So now I've been warned...

...buuutttt, I'm still going to watch it anyway Wink . I love Brittney Karbowski's take on Aoba from the first volume, and Jessica Boone's holding her own as Akoa so far.

Jinki along with This Ugly yet Beautiful World were the only 2006 ADV titles that I enjoyed. I'm really glad that they packed these titles onto 3 DVDs instead of the 4 that Yugo and Area 88 took a year before. I hope they continue this trend since 3 episodes per disc is a tad sparse.

The second volume of Jinki is in my opinion the weakest of the three since I enjoyed the last couple episodes and the epilogue. The second volume tends to have a hard time juggling the time frames and losses some of the focus built in the first DVD. Part of the fun is trying to see how the characters and plots merge, but in volume two the lack of cohesion can get a little frustrating.

I actually really enjoy the animation in Jinki Extend. The 3D animation is very smoothly integrated with the 2D. AnimeonDVD review has once again stated what I think about a show in a far more elegant way than I could:

You see enough shows avoid those in general but Jinki: Extend has some really gorgeous moments where her hair is flowing in the wind in very detailed and fluid ways. When she's standing on the Moribito's hand and looking out at the table top mountains the animation really looks almost theatrical quality. While great looking animation can't make a great show, it can certainly enhance an average one and if the script is well done it can make it more than it would be otherwise.


Then again I also like the animation in Rumbling Hearts and find the animation in Speed Grapher quite adequate. Since all three got C grades I tend to believe that Theron is a hard grader for animation. Especially since Zak gave Master Keaton and Berserk a B in animation Carlo gave GaoGaiGar a B in animation and Carl gave Solty Rei a B. I would say that most of Theron's Cs are as well animated as most other reviewers B grade shows.

It's been a while since I saw the series, and I never saw the DVD only episode, but most of those mysteries mentioned in the review are never really solved in the series. I don't think the Ancient Jinki's appear or are even mentioned for the remainder of the series. This isn't like Eva, chock full of religious and pyschological references in which outside research can be justified to an extent. Barring situations like that, a series (or anything else) should not require internet research to comprehend or enjoy. This series was truly a mess.

This was one of those titles that started of decently and I really wanted to like (largely due to Aoba) but the series fell flat on its face as one of the biggest messes I had seen (granted this was before GSD, but even that wasn't so convoluted and confusing).

I didn't do a review on it, but the last DVD was much less of a mess than the second one. Though it still doesn't explain anywhere near everything, it is far more cohesive and coherent, in part because it isn't bouncing between two different time frames.

The DVD-only follow-up episode kinda brings to a resolution one major plot point not resolved in episode 12 and deals with the "what comes next" stories for all the main characters.

I never saw the DVD only episode (yes, I watched the fansubs) but a large number of plot threads were just ignored or wrapped up very poorly and I doubt the DVD-only episode would help much. Showing what happens to everyone afterward would certainly help a bit, but I don't see how it could fix more than a small portion of the problems that latter portion of the series had.

However, I would agree that the last few episodes at least made far more sense than the preceding episodes, provided you just ignored the numerous dropped or poorly explained elements from earlier in the series.

The third DVD also has a promotion event as an extra. This includes the band that does the OP playing a few songs live and Angela performing the awesome ED song live. This and the bonus episode and the good episode count (for ADV) makes this a good deal in my book. I can't believe the epilogue episode was not broadcasted.
