Not only anime, but some good American cartoons got stiffed. Where's Venture Brothers? They felt the need to nominate Moral Orel however...
Well, some good news comes from this list.
Oh that is just painful. At least nominate something like Okami for aesthetic reasons.
Things like this make me glad for the first American Anime Awards. |

The reason there aren't any anime nominated probably has a lot to do with this first paragraph from the submission rules:
"SUBMISSION ELIGIBILITY Entries submitted for consideration must be from productions that first publicly aired, or were exhibited in an animation festival or were commercially released in the United States between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2006." If the first public airing has to have been in the United States, that pretty much shuts out anything that had its debut in Japan. |

Best I can tell from looking at their rules, the specific intent of these awards is to only cover US-original works. And even then, there are some very specific rules, like for example "Compilations or animated productions that originally premiered in other media (e.g., theatrical or television) and were later released on DVD or video are not eligible for this award." (for the Best Animated Home Entertainment Production), that seem to specifically exclude anime from being considered.
...and the 'Best animated video game' award seems to be just way the hell out there entirely, since the rules read "An Annie Award for Best Animated Video Game shall be awarded to an animated television series or animated television special in recognition of creative excellence in the art of animation." - there's gotta be some kind of mistake there. I think what they are trying to have the category be is "best game based on an animated production", or some-such. Finally, again, the fact that A Scanner Darkly isn't mentioned anywhere also clearly shows that te ASIFA firmly believes that animation has no business trying to appeal to anyone over the age of 12, unless it's within a commercial. |

There's no validity to these awards - they nominated The Batman for something last year.

To be fair, there haven't been many noteworthy OVAS released lately, either. Hellsing's the recent one, and that just came out today. But yeah, not even The Boondocks, huh? Oh well, at least that Avatar chara designer got nominated... |

..and how is it anime news when it's talking about awards that specifically only relate to American-produced goods? Yes, it is animation, but still... Spongebob and the latest CG eye-and-brain candy?

but with the rule about the animations needing to debut in America frist...what are even some that have? or is this a new rule? and now i can see why it'd be news...without anime not even getting a nod. |

I'm going to agree with CorneredAngel in that the Annies want to limit it to stuff that appeals to the 12 and under group. Too bad, people might get a glimpse and understand what anime could really be.
And the part about being the first public airing to be in the U.S....Blatant and obvious shut out of Japanese anime. |

I'm going to have to disagree. I just spoke to Antran Manoogian, president of ASIFA Hollywood, and he wanted Paprika to be a part of the Annies. But their policy is that films must be submitted by their producers, and that didn't happen. If you go to ASIFA's website they link to the official Paprika website... I didn't ask about A Scanner Darkly, but I suspect that it might be the same story, -t |

Contrary to the belief of the uproar anime can and has been nominated in the past. Some people here can be way too sensitive, and I personally don't see a problem with awards for domestic animation, anime has their own awards as well, I don't see any US titles in that mix. So what makes it alright in one situation and not the other? Because only a benefit towards anime is allowed? Just like Americanization isn't allowed but another title modified and made into anime is? I swear, sometimes I get tired of some of the standards tossed around in the fandom by some groups.
Hardly, matter of fact around the world most film awards don't even consider American releases for their awards where as foreign films often receive consideration for awards here. |
