I absolutely love the anime and I'm sure fangirls will eat this thing up since it does play out all types of fantasies. I wonder if there has been any 'successful' dating sim that were targetted for women.

This certainly isn't shocking. The show provides a good base for a game. Personally, I'd rather see a sequel series than a dating sim game though. I enjoyed this show more for the funny storytelling than for the fanservice, and it would be nice to see it developed more fully in that area. If it's only appreciated for the romance and relationships, I'd say it's under-valued.

Of course, it may be that others value it for more than that too, and that this game will expand more than just the relationships. I hope so.

Is it actually coming out for PS2? Why not PS3? Are they still making PS2 games? Odd...

Just like the transition from PS to PS2, I'm sure they'll still be making PS2 games for quite some time. The games cost far less to produce and are more stable, reliable sellers. Once the PS3 becomes more widespread and commonly used, they'll make games for it.

Oh, if only I had a Japanese PS2, or for that matter, the capability to read Japanese.

Of course. I don't really know how successful these games are, but there are quite many dating sims and "romantic adventure games" (= visual novels = dating sims pretending to have a plot) for women. And they're not all for dreaming maidens, some of them are pretty racy (if not downright erotic).

As for this one, were it any other anime I'd just say "eh, shameless merchandising", but since it's Ouran Host Club we're talking about... Very Happy;; It's a wonder they haven't thought of it earlier. In fact, it's a wonder the characters themselves didn't think of it in the series. Very Happy (Maybe Renge scared them away.)

I'd love to get this game when it comes out, but I don't have a Japanese PS2 (or any other, for that matter), and I'm too poor to buy one just for the sake of this one game. :/ What a pity.

In addition, several such games have been made into anime in Japan (I don't think any of them have been licensed though). I know of Angelique (which must be quite popular based on the number of related OVAs and TV series) and Haruka (not quite as popular, but well enough to spawn some sequals). I believe there are several others, though I don't recall the names.

There's a series called NeoRomance that includes games like Angelique, Harukanaru toki no naka de, Giniro no corda and such (these all have been made into anime). Every year there's an event (or more?) centered around these games, or rather, the famous and popular voice actors who appear in them. As far as I know, these are all romantic fantasies and their main pulls are the prettyboys and the seiyuu. However, there are other games that are less innocent (some that I saw were pretty explicit), to the point that some seiyuu use pseudonyms if they work in one.

By the way, I hope that this Ouran AVG will be as tongue-in-the-cheek as the series itself. It'd be a pity (though still a damn great idea, merchandising-wise) to release a serious game for such a series.

I wanna import it, but dating sims require reading a lot of text and I barely can read past the first grade's kanjis Sad

I can't believe I forgot about that one. I knew it was based on a game and I just read the second volume of the manga the other day.

Anyhow, my point was that, yes, there have most definitely been successful games like these for girls.

Meine Liebe was also a female-targetted dating sim that became an anime. (An anime with two seasons, in fact....) I think it had two or three games, each for a different system. I think it's GBA and PS2....

But yeah, this stuff isn't new.

Others have already replied about this, but yeah, there have been a lot. Right now there are about as many bishounen released in Japan as bishoujo games, although that probably wasn't true a couple years ago. But franchises like Angelique have been around for a long time.

I also hope the game will be more comedy than serious, but I have a feeling they'll go the traditional route... which will be very very interesting if you get to play as Haruhi (because everyone has a different opinion as to who Haruhi should fall in love with at the end).

The other option would be to let the player play as a Host Club customer girl... not as cool as playing as Haruhi, but that would open up Haruhi as an option to date, which would probably please a lot of male Ouran fans.

Maybe they'll do more "Ukidoki Memorial" parodies... T_T (parody of Tokimeki Memorial... and yes, Tokimeki Memorial Girls Side is yet another popular dating sim for girls to add to the list).

As for NeoRomance, Angelique is most famous for being the first of its kind. It was the first dating sim game ever for girls, so it has a "classic" feel and wide recognition (manga shoujo mangaka seem inspired by it, since you can read them talking about Angelique in their talk columns... in manga like Fruits Basket and Hana-Kimi.. also spotted in-story visual gag references to Angelique in Sorcerer Hunters and Petshop of Horrors... it's a lot more popular in Japan than people think~). The newest Angelique anime premiered in Japan 6 days ago (check it out!), so after ten years, its popularity is still strong.

But lately it seems Haruka is becoming the most popular... it's the most fun to play because of its RPG-like style, has the most original stories, and amazing historical Japanese character designs. Haruka was also the only game for girls ever to be adapted into a THEATRICAL (theater release! big for any series!) anime. Because of this I'll bet you five internet-dollars that we see more Haruka-related anime this year.

Renge's dream has come true. Anime hyper

I find this very interesting, it feels like the actual kinds of things the Host Club sells to their fangirls. haha
