I think the reason the 2nd editions are still flipped is because the first editions, which were flipped, reached 21 volumes before Viz decided to re-release the series. So it's a lot less trouble, and cheaper, to just repackage what was already done.

As for this volume. Some fans do not like the ending, saying it was inconclusive. But I loved the ending, I found it satisfying. spoiler[Yeah, Ranma and Akane don't officially get married, but they are still young and least they were both willing to go through with it (before everything became one huge brawl); and then there was Ranma's revelation earlier.]

Joyous day! Ranma is done! 16 years it took for Viz to get it out the door.

Wow I almost fainted. Finally Rumiko Takahashi decides to finish a story. After Inuyasha's ending she left us all dissapointed. Cool I'm gonna order it!

Carlos, I read the review before I checked the name of the reviewer, and I knew instantly you were a man. No offense, but definitely a male perspective.

From a woman's perspective, Takahashi does anything BUT end a series well. She has amazing momentum in the beginning with these brilliant stories and characters and dilemmas. Sadly, soon after everything is established, she stagnates, rehashing the same old dilemma with every color of the rainbow. And finally, her endings lack romantic closure. And the loose endings aren't tied up well at all.

But you were dead on in your comment that her stories are about the journey, not the destination. But as a woman who primarily read Ranma for the romance, there was no payoff. No resolution to the constant teasing moments between them where they nearly admit their feelings. Were the two any closer really than they were at the beginning of the series? Their relationship was left as it started. In a perpetual state of "almost".

And on that note, I'm dreading to see how she'll end Inuyasha. My expectations are low.

Are you under some bizarre impression that you have to be a woman to read something for the romance? Ugh.

Takahashi never really resolves a relationship. Even in Maison Ikkoku she was incredibly reserved with giving the audience what they wanted at the end.

Reading this review was quite...an experience. I'm not sure if we're on the same page (hah) or volume of manga; in my entire life I've never heart a single person praise Ranma 1/2's ending. I myself hated it, since like a lot of Takahashi's work it's not soundly conclusive; to find some people praising it was indeed a surprise!

I've been a fan of this show forever. This is actually the show that got me into anime, so it has a soft spot.
Therefore its no surprise that I liked it. I was kinda pissed off when I saw the cover though, because then I was expecting a wedding (although maybe it was just a teaser, and it didn't actually happen, I thought).

But in the end, I was happy with the outcome. It really did have it all.

a romantic conclusion that still manages to leave a hint of uncertainty.

A bit of uncertainty? I felt the ending resolved nothing despite the heartfelt confessions/actions in this volume. Pure disappointment for me.

Why does Takahashi keep doing that?

What are you talking about? Inuyasha is still ongoing. I wish fans will stop blaming Takahashi-sensei for the ANIME ending that she had absolutely NO responsiblity over. That was the studio's fault for that one and the manga is still ongoing. Sheesh, research people! (Plus she finished Ranma over 12-13 years ago, a year or two before she even started on Inuyasha.)

I rarely say that I'm embarrassed to be a woman, but I am right now. I LOVED the ending. It was the most plausible ending for Ranma. And I need to clear some stuff here with the fans who keep on saying that Ranma and Akane's relationship didn't change and it was left inconclusive (although it was an open ending), who are wrong because they fail to get certain clues in the series.

First of all, in the beginning, Ranma and Akane wanted NOTHING to do with each other. Ranma was too busy trying to find a way to go back to Jusenkyou, and Akane who is not interested in having a fiance and was in love with Dr. Tofu at the time (despite she knew that Dr. Tofu had a huge crush on Kasumi). During the series we see them going from dislking each other, comrades sharing the same misfortune (their engagement), to somewhat friends, to unrealized surfacing feelings, to realizing and hide/denying those said feeling until the last volume they confessed their feelings to each other somewhat. I'm happy that they didn't go thru the wedding because of that. They still too young and they JUST realized they like each other, if they married, it will still be out of duty and not love. Plus, their romantic rival won't let them get hitched that easily in true Ranma 1/2 fashion. It's really stuble and not outright broadcasting unlike in shoujo manga (those majority of endings I have serious beef with). But it does leave off in an open ending on the new path of Ranma and Akane's relationship. In a way, it makes them more life-like in that their story will still go on even though we won't witness it (which is the significance of the last page with Ranma and Akane holding hands going down the road). And Ranma isn't shoujo either.

Oh, and it's very likely there will be an open ending for Inuyasha since Takahashi-sensei rarely gives conclusive endings.

Although I'm not really a fan anymore, but Ranma 1/2 still has a place in my heart for being the first non-televised and uncensored anime I ever saw when I was thirteen (which was like 11 years ago, man). I still enjoy watching Ranma 1/2 time to time but I might buy the manga one day for the nostgalia factor.
