Son of a submariner. I here that the script for FF6 is actually worse than Woolsey's version. Anyway, he wasn't that bad. At least he used actual translations, and not just the bastardized Engrish which was the norm for the time. (See Phantasy Star.)

It depends on what you consider "worse" to be. The FFVI translation is a faithful translation (aside from established names) while FF3 was an adaptation. A good adaptation, mind you, but an adaptation nonetheless.

*LOL* Very timely. Woolsey did a pretty decent job bring the story, but there are parts that I really wonder about. Like at the very start of Final Fantasy 3 (6) World of Ruin.

spoiler[If you let poor old Cid die, Celes takes a "Leap of Faith" because Cid said that will perked them up, which hint that there was more people there, just very well hidden. But in the Final Fantasy VI Advance, they couldn't take living any more, so they jumped off the cliff to kill themselves, which Celes tried to do.] But I'll leave that a part of Nintendo's censorship, like with Mortal Kombat. The only time paid any attention to the story in Final Fantasy VI Advance when there was a change in the dialogue. A little darker then the one that Woolsey did for it, other wise, the same story.

And FF7's translation was easily worse off than FF6's anyway.

I hear Tactics is even worse. If I actually had the patience to play it longr than 10 minutes, I'd probably know.

And I CAN'T FREAKING BELIEVE (well, I can) that FF5 didn't come to the U.S. and they thought to release MYSTIC QUEST instead!

Mystic Quest was fun, and FF5 is just an excuse to grind through dungeons to cover up the uninspired plot. I do wish Seiken Densetsu 3 made it though...

Final Fantasy Tactics' translation is awful, but it's easy to put up with since FFT is simply my favorite Final Fantasy ever (FFVI is up there too, though, I'm busy playing the Advance version at the moment). I am hoping the remake of FFT will come over here to the US and that we will get a better translation.

Anyway, on-topic here, Ted Woolsey did translation work on many of my favorite games from the 16-bit era: Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, and Super Mario RPG. I think the English script in all of those games were pretty enjoyable, so I definitely appreciate his work. The new GBA translation of FFVI is great because it balances what made Woolsey's original translation great with some revisions that strengthen it further. I'm pretty happy with how the US release of the remake has turned out, specifically with the bug fixes on Vanish/Death, Evasion, etc.

I find it an even greater offense that Seiken Densetsu 3 was never released back then, and STILL is not released in the US.
