They think inserting Japanese words into their daily speech is so kawaaaiiiii. The really sad fact is it's not just kids under the age of say 14 or 15.

This is actually true based off of my expriences. Recently I was harassed by some Wapanese juniors and seniors who thought I was Japanese(I'm Chinese, FYI) and they started screaming words like echii at each other and thought they were so cool ever sinced they were obsessed with anime and drew their own manga whenever they had a chance. Oh yeah, about their harassment, they started worshipping(?) me because they thought I was the closest thing they had to Japanese culture.

I guess I've just been really lucky that in all the anime clubs I've been in people, (for the most part) have been really nice and cool. But sometimes I'll come across a fan who looks down on me for liking shoujo, or gives me flak for preferring to watch Spirited Away dubbed (so I can focus on the gorgeous art !Razz ). That is really annoying....but I haven't run into it very often.

As for the overzealous yaoi fangirl: I think she'll grow out of it eventually. I remember how obsessed my friends and I were over Gundam Wing and Fushigi Yugi in junior high. We'd read racy fanfictions, talk about our favorite characters at lunch, and print out images from anime galleries and hang them up in our lockers next to N*Sync.
She'll probably grow out of it. I think this is totally normal for junior high/early high school ages.

Awesome idea! We get several rants at the same time. Get out the boxin gloves its Show time!

Where to begin...Sean.
After searching for awhile I came up with this: The US doesn't have a offical lanaguage- English has long been the de facto national language. Not American. Confused http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_in_the_United_States

Secondly...everywhere you go there are stupid people. Not just in anime cons or gatherings. Sports fans, art people, teenagers, everyone. As for what you said in the rant- everyone has different tastes. not to knock you or anything- agree with some of the stuff you said. Just realize everyone has different thoughts on everything and ranting about it isn't going to change it.

Honestly it seems like you picked up everything talked about in the past 3 months and copy and pasted.

-Yifan
Awesome rant. A lot of people need to read that. But just as you said- just because you tell someone isn't going to change them. Its the exact same thing with this rant.

-Turtle Lady
before I jump headfirst into this rant like it was a swimming pool...
Why are you guys looking at pervy manga at the age of 14?

Whoa Whoa whoa...gravi?
spoiler[I could have sworn that had fights in gundam like robots, blew up several buildings and..Shu bled enough to turn an ocean red. ] I figured the school boys type yaoi's are more realistic. You're in a school with no girls all day and theres that one pretty boy who grew up cooking with his twin sister.
:Cough:
<--I giggle when someone says balls. Your friend Mary still has time to grow up. if you're only 14 enjoy it. No need to rush into things.
Everyone has anime crushes. I know a grown man who'd fall to his knees if Tatsuki {insert yaoiishness here} walked in the door.

It's kind of like the guys who get off on tenticale rape. That crap isn't going to happen just like Mary rolling on a bed with Koga but it doesn't hurt to dream it. Unless you're in public.

I think that kitten wants to eat me.

Am I the only person who thought the last rant sounded like some kid screaming "I'm SO much more mature than my friend because I don't giggle at the word 'balls!' GOD, my friends are annoying!" ? I didn't really find a point in that entire thing.

I have to say I generally agree with the first two rants, though. Especially Sean Tugwell. Fandom seriously needs a chill pill sometimes, and I often feel just as exasperated as he does. I count myself lucky that I have yet to see one of those creepy paddle girls in real life.

Plenty of people should take note of the second rant and drop generalizations when dishing out criticism, or at least back up a generalization with specific points. It's true that I'm almost always inclined to find a show filled with moe characters distasteful right off the bat, but for the specific reason that, for me, their personalities are indeed unrealistic and unappealing. (Not always the case. I love Elfen Lied, for instance.)

@the first rant: thank you! finally someone has the guts to say it. i've notice a lot of those things around the ANN boards, and frankly it's the reason i don't post here often. this place is filled with elitists who feel the need to tell you how to enjoy your anime viewing.
1. sub VS dub: pffft who cares, i'll watch it my way thanks. dubbed (bite me sub elitists)
2. fansub VS R1. i watch the od fan sub from time to time when the show isn't licenced, and i import all my anime from the US. do what ever YOU want, i don't give a crap.
3. i've never encountered any of this 'happy hate mongering' at any australian cons. next time you see these people holding signs like that, tell them to go back to the westborough baptist church with the rest of the religious hate mongerers.
4. fangirls/fanboys: try acting like normal people weirdo's. luckily for me, i'm not the most approachable looking guy, so i get to avoid the random glomps... (but i never get any free hugs either Crying or Very sad )...

@second rant: read about half of it, and gave up. it wasn't making much sense. (me bagging out narutards but then they don't stop being narutards hurts my reputation? pffft! i don't have a reputation to hurt... besides this is the internet, if my screen name gets a bad name for itself, then the 5 others i have can start talking...) if they don't want us to bag them out, then they shouldn't try and make us see things from their point of view either, cos if their not going to budge, then neither am i.

@third rant: read half of that too... all i can say is, welcome to growing up. it sucks, get over it.

Rant one:
Anime fans are stupid because people in general are stupid. In any major group of people, you will find that most of them are quite stupid. This isnt just anime fan behavior. This is people in general behavior.

Rant two:
The world would be a much nicer place if people would learn to like what they like, and let other people do the same. I dont like Naruto. I dont have anything against people who do. Whats the big deal? Probably, if your going to be condemning an entire fanbase, it might mean your a bit insecure about your own choices of anime.

Rant three:
It seems to me your comments are more directed at fangirlishness in general, not yaoi and shounen-ai in specific. I agree, I find it incredibly irritating.
The other day I was at Chapters in the manga section, just browsing, and there were these girls behind me. They went all "GIGGLE GIGGLE" all the time. They were talking about Naruto, and one girl was all like, "blah blah blah and I think Saske like so and so, but (FRIENDS NAME) gets mad everytime I say that? Because, you know, she LIKES Saske? TEEHEEEHEE"
It made me really embarased to be in the manga section. These are the types of people I am being associated with by standing here?
However, 14 is still fairly young. And heck, I was dead certain I was "in love" in the Digimon Emporer when I was.... oh, I dunno, around 14 probably. (Im 18 now)
Basicly, its just a squealy, girly, annoying phase that some girls go through. If she's still acting like that in another few years though, thats when I would get concerned.

....Wow. The moral of this week? Human intelligence in general is very, very, small. ._.

To add onto your experience some local retards did the same sort of thing at the local Chinese restaurant. I was picking up an order and these 3 kids, with their manga in tow, were sitting eating and said how "kawaii" the food was. For starters it's a CHINESE restaurant. Second, every Asian is Japanese of course. The owner, and friend of my family, is actually Vietnamese but explaining the difference to people like this is pointless.

BTW, the top rant is courtesy of yours truly. Got a problem or comment feel free to PM me. I don't believe in complaining anonymously so if you got a question then go ahead and ask. Keep it polite though. Oh and trust me, I do know majority of people are stupid and saying people need to show some respect and not act like jerks is probably pointless. Maybe I'm picky and retarded but I find that excuse wearing thing. After years of hearing it, and saying it, simply saying people are stupid feels like a way out of responsibility. Besides, it's one thing to complain and not do anything to fix the problem. A rant might be a very small thing in the grand scheme but at least it's something.

Those rants made me feel tired. I've reached the point where enough is enough on both sides of all those subjects, and enough is also enough with telling people to just drop it. They don't get it and clearly will never drop it so I've entered ignore mode and barely skimmed most of this week's column!

On a separate note, that kitty with the goth eyeliner-ish black rings is creepy.

That was you? Kudos, man. I enjoyed that rant the best. It was like someone venting everything I secretly felt, and I don't need to even take the backlash for it. Wink

Rant 1: I definitely know what you mean. I've seen many a retarded fangirl squealing over something that's just stupid. People are just overactive and they need to calm down. Most people I'm friends with are pretty much right in the middle with the whole sub/dub and R1/Fansubbed debate. People are jerks as well. Of course, you need to know when they are intentionally being jerks or just ignorant. Most of 4chan, for example, just pretend to be jerks. Once you learn that, the imageboard can be very enjoyable (I personally only browse /a/ and /tv/ though).

Rant 2: As far as I can tell, this rant was (a) about not judging a person from what anime they watch and (b) not judging an anime without seeing it first. The latter really bugs me. I like shows like Red Garden, Gankutsuou, and Haibane Renmei (to name but a few), but I also enjoy shonen crud such as Bleach and the occasional well animated episode of Naruto (which are few and far between unfortunately). I'm also a huge fan of Key and their works, and I feel that Zac especially gives these shows a bum rap. Kanon has an amazing story. Even though it's not the best by today's standards. It was the eroge which set the standards for future games to aspire to. The story was definitely emotionally touching. One of Key's more recent games (kinetic novel actually, no choices involved), Planetarian, made me cry like a little girl, and I like to think that I'm fairly manly (18 if you need an age).

Rant 3: Might have had more of an impact on me if the girl wasn't 14. I know a girl who squeals kawaii when she's watching anime on her laptop ALL the time. It gets frustrating, especially when other people are trying to watch something more serious on the room TV (of an anime club by the way). This girl also refuses to support any kind of DVD release at all because "the companies mess it up". I've tried explaining that the Japanese DVD's are more expensive with less episodes, that there are subs available, etc, but to no avail. I just gave up.

Well, the problem with that line of thinking is that there really isnt much you CAN do to change general stupidity :/
I mean sure, you can TELL someone "Hey, did you realize that you sound like a complete idiot? I know you probably arent one, which is why I am informing you you sound like one, so please, try and work on that" But chances are they wont listen. D: The thing is, people themselves need to realize it, and want to change. SO, if someone wakes up one day and realises, "Oy, Iv been acting like an idiot. I think Ill stop" Then that works.
Anyways Iv always figured that most people I interact with will be stupid, especially online, and learned to just live with it. The only person you can change is yourself, so I try and make sure that I dont act like stupid. (Although Im sure I do at times. Everyone does. >_>)

Anyways yours was certainly a very well put together rant, and I enjoyed it. Good job. Very Happy

I liked rant one. You shouldn't have to be told what you can and can't buy, it's a free world, free industry (not in a fansub sense) and you have buying rights, unless you're under the age of 18. Then you're not supposed to get your hands on some...naughty material Wink

Who picked the rants this week? I mean, The first one wasn't bad ( the best buy thing made me laugh, because I do the same thing) although you would think all the points that were made would be common sense to most people... but the last two were terrible. Not because I didn't agree with 'em or whatever, but they just weren't well written. Rant two was another weak why-can't-we-all-get-along pile of crap. And then rant three... bitch bitch bitch. Oh, so your 14-year-old friend laughs at the word "balls" too much and annoys you? Then next time you see her tell her to shut up and slap tha ho (Eazy-E style!).

You would think they would be common sense but obviously tons of people don't. Some people can't seem to grasp the idea of not bashing or preaching to other people about what they should or should not watch, or what they can or can't buy for example.

While true I feel I must try. I was raised around the idea that if you wanna bitch about something do something, anything, to change what you're complaining about. If you don't you're just whining and should just be quiet. I figure it's a pointless battle that will no doubt strip away more of my sanity. As they say though, somebody's gotta do it.

Personally i prefer subtitles over dubs, of course if im visiting my friend who prefers it vice versa i will watch anime his way . It takes some getting used to in order to enjoy subtititles, for most people who are not used to them it DOES take concentration to read them. If your not a fast reader or your reading skills are not that good you may never be able to get used to them. Secondly no matter how stupid you think people can get they will allways find a way to dissapoint you further.

As for yaoi and its like, whatever floats your boat. My wife watches that stuff and i cant stand it, but not to surprisingly she doesnt like "harem" anime. but i dont bother trying to control what she or anyone else watches its a free world lets all live freely.

Regarding the fanboy complaint, lots of people like "glomping" and that sort of behavior because in there sad lonely lives getting glomped from random members of the opposite sex is something that they lookforward to. I cant say i realy blame them.... Nubile young lithe bodies pressed tightly against eachother.... jaja, just kidding, more like pudgy greasy bodies...it would be nice if people would respect eachother a bit more.

Hey my wife is chinese, i wonder if that means lots of anime fans are going to be realy jealouse of me?

Depending on the circumstances i dont see anything wrong with sprinkling a few japonese words into your vocabulary, english language is a "bastard" language anyways composed of parts from many different parent languages. Who the hell cares if you want to use some words you find cool from a different language, we all do and not just with japonese.

Also what the hell is with the giggling at balls, im looking at mine now and they dont seem that funny to me... (i couldnt resist it, sorry folks)
