It's always good to hear reviewers say the same things about a series as yourself. Story of Saiunkoku is one of my favorite new series, and I can't wait to check out the dub. I agree with everything you said about it, Ms. Bamboo. Now Amazon just needs to hurry up and deliver my box + volume 1.

I would also like to note that my boyfriend is a fan of the series too. Some guys can like the series even with its amazing girliness. Cool

I love Saiunkoku also. I can't wait to get my copy. Shurei is so refreshing, and she just gets better with every episode. I actually cheered out loud for her at one point. And what's really great is that she's no Mary Sue. She's short-sighted in some areas and has real faults she needs to overcome. But she works so hard and is so smart about it that I just love her.

(And it doesn't hurt that most of the guys she surrounded by are as pretty as they can be. Anime smile)

The plot in this just get thicker and thicker too. You might think romance would be the point of it, but it's not. While it's important and a driving force behind many things, it's not front and center, Shurei's dream is. Even though it's set in ancient China, I think the issues it raises about love and career are relevant to young women of today.

I don't think I'll ever be able to buy Peach Girl just because of DVD covers that look like that. It doesn't sound like it is that bad of a series but if the character designs look like that I just could not watch it. And even if they don't I'd have to deal with some hideous DVD covers and it just would not work.

I've been on the fence about The Story of Saiunkoku, but everything I have heard about it recently is all positive so I'll probably add the volume 1 + artbox to my August orders. It may have a pink cover but at least the cover is a whole heck of a lot nicer looking than the Peach Girl ones. And yeah it does seem girly, but the story sounds great and that's enough for me to watch it. If it does get too girly I can just mix up watching it with episodes of Basilisk.

In the picture, anyone know the name of the show for the poster that is right above the Fullmetal Alchemist and Pretear posters?

Yes, this is shelf-obsessed enough, in my opinion.

Man, I should check out Story of Saiunkoku since Bamboo likes it and lots of people in this thread do as well.

Now that's my kind of shelf. Except mine in split into three sections of my room and is considerably smaller. As for the anime, I wasn't really interested in Sauinkoku at first, but with all these great reviews I'm starting to wonder if it'll be worth my while. I'm really picky when it comes to the anime I buy because I focus so little on DVDs and more on manga. I'll try and watch it first. Wink

I read a review in an anime magazine for Story of Saiunkoku, and although it got a good review, it seemed to me like a rip off of fushigi yuugi. now, considering i've only read the first manga of FY, I don't really have a place to say that, but the whole "reverse harem in china" made me think of that. But since no one else here seems to think that, maybe I'll try it out.

It's nothing like Fushigi Yûgi. The only similarity is the setting and the one girl per ten guys ratio. It's a drama that reveals the plot as the story goes on. It's really good and something I'd be buying. It's not really girly so men might like it.

Combine every mean girl you've ever known in reality, and in the movies, and you get a demon-witch akin to Sae
My poor Sae, she's so well understood.

No, I didn't write that wrong. She really IS a demon-witch! I still like her for some reason. Maybe it's just her complete lack of pointless hand wringing over whether or not she should do something. Sae just does whatever strikes her as best for Sae. I guess I admire that clarity.

Anyway, I am so happy to see that The Story of Saiunkoku was Shelf Worthy. I've been thinking about getting this one ever since it was announced and Neverwhere had positive things to say about it. As much as I'm sure it would annoy her to hear this, my desire to buy it increased substantially when I read that Kelly Sheridan was doing the lead. (English dub fan and Sango fan=me.)

Now, Bamboo gives the series not merely a seal of quality approval, but a rather glowing review! I'm sold! (I'm man enough to buy a girly series without embarrassment. And that cover is awesome even if it is pink!)

Heck, the girlier the better in my opinion. Women make far more interesting characters than men most of the time. (Personal opinion.) As long as it doesn't degenerate into a "look at the bishounens" show, I think I'll be quite satisfied.

If only I could say the same thing for Kashimashi. Sigh. Being an English dub fan and a Yuri/Shoujo-ai fan is a hard road to walk. Media Blasters and I are not currently on friendly terms.

Never seen Space Pirate Mito. After reading that review for it's sequel, not sure I'd want to either.

And Bamboo, I feel your pain. The only comparable experience I have is the fun of biting into a perfectly healthy looking apple and discovering that it was completely rotten inside. (Sometimes having a bathroom within ten feet of your kitchen is a good thing.)

Nothing is worse than thinking you're going to enjoy something or being in the process of enjoying something only to find out the whole thing was tainted. Although I would very much like to know the story of how that hair got into that cup. It's likely an interesting tale.

You know, it could have been a chest or back hair if that makes you feel any better Wink They look similar.

I am glad to hear good things about Saiunkoku, I ordered my box 2 months ago, but it has yet to ship. Confused But I am very excited.

By the way do studios send you these? If so, do they send you the boxes as well? I heard this box was a little funky, but I can't find any pics of it.

Ask and I shall ensure you receive! (Well, within reason.)

Art box exterior.

Art box interior. (This takes a while to load on my computer for some reason.)

*Edited out a spelling error. Why can't I catch them before I post?

When I first saw the cover, I thought, "I hope this isn't a Fushigi Yuugi ripoff." And then when I saw the opening sequence, I thought, "Man, even the shots look like they were ripped off from Fushigi Yuugi."

But, the series itself is nothing like FY. The story is completely different, and although there are some coincidences, the two are nothing alike.

=/ I really wish Geneon would stop releasing boxes that require you to throw out the DVD case. I guess it saves space or something, but I enjoy the packaging artwork a lot, and having to throw it away kind of stinks.

That is a really impressive collection. I don't think I could ever send a picture of my collection in to shelf life. My collection of anime only takes up 2 1/2 shelves. I have a grand trotal of three manga. One that I won in a raffle and two which a friend bought for me when she went over to Japan. I don't buy as much anime as I used to because I'm about to start college and I really need the money. I read manga, but I have never collected it because I already collect regular comic books, and those take up 3 shelves. The rest of my shelves house a decent book collection though. Most of which I get at bargain sales, with the exception of books that I really want. Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, A Song of Ice and Fire, etc...
