Thanks for being clear that there are no differences from the indivdual volumes. As I already own them, but was probably going to buy this if there was something special to it. I was kinda hoping more color inserts, maybe. But this will be a great price for anyone interested in the series.

I was a little confused by this comment:
Does the reviewer mean that the printing quality is subpar only for the mega-tome? Or is he making a blanket statement that applies to the mega-tome as well as (thinner and previously-released) Volume 1? I'm asking just because, as I do not own either, I would not want to buy the mega-tome if its printing was inferior in the way described whereas the originals' printing was not inferior in this way. |

The Azumanga Daioh manga is great . . . as is everything about Azumanga Daioh. I own the whole series already so I don't need this, but if I didn't, I'd totally get it. Sounds like a good buy.
I swear though, no matter how many times I read or watch Azumanga Daioh, I will always laugh at it. Even thinking about some parts will make me laugh. Anyone who hasn't seen or read Azumanga Daioh definitely needs to. |

I liked the way anime was laid out in segments. Never really liked the 4 panel format in the manga, but I still enjoyed it.
One thing I noticed, Osaka has a more rough 'dialect' in the manga. I kept thinking Osaka was in the mob. That was very clear in the beginning. It went from "How ya doin'?" then went to "Nice to meet 'cha" for the adaptation for the anime. Azuma is just to cool. I don't how he does it with his simple style, but he created two of the most memorable series to date. |

No kidding. Most people have seen The Jungle Book, be it on VHS or DVD. That was probably one of the least obscure changes they made. The manga itself is great, and I'd recommend it even with the edits ADV made. They did try to redeem themselves after people raised a huge fuss over volume 1, most notably them changing Yukari to a Spanish teacher, then changing her back to an English teacher for volume 2. This was one of their first efforts, so a lot of mistakes were made in the release. But those mistakes don't overshadow how great the manga itself is. They do, however, leave some of us annoyed at their stupidity in over-localization. Just as a note, the anime has a less Americanized translation (subtitled, not sure about the dub), so readers will notice a bit of a difference between the two. Though I don't know if I'd recommend getting the mega edition or just going and finding the single volumes. As there are no updates in the new version, and the price isn't really that much of a savings over the 4 original volumes, it just seems too cumbersome. It's too big to take with you anywhere (imagine carrying around a paperback version of Webster's), and just a general hassle to handle. This is in contrast to TP's Fruits Basket double volume, which is hardcover, increases the size of the pages without print quality dropping, and just looks more attractive to a collector. Same with Darkhorse's Gunsmith cats omnibus. That's still small enough to be portable, more like a King paperback in size than a giant paperback dictionary. |

Actually, the over-localization has been fixed. What the reviewer forgot to mention is that quite a few things in the first two volumes have been re-translated. For example, Yukari is consistantly an English teacher throughout all of the Omnibus (or the Bible, as I prefer to call it). I own the old version, but bought the Azumanga Bible to give it away as a Christmas present, so that's how I know. 
Anyway, I'd recommend everyone to get this. It's a great release, even with those small quality issues. And it costs half of what the original volumes cost together. And you won't be bothered by the over-localized translation, either. |

Now that's good to hear. It's the best reason to get the omnibus. It's a shame they didn't release the single volumes with the corrected translation, though. Heck, if they'd put this out as a four-pack rather than an omnibus, I'd have picked it up just for the corrected translation. I just really don't like the size of it. |

I haven't seen The Jungle Book, but really, I think a lot of people know the song even now. The Jonas Brothers covered it on Disneymania 5, after all.

I definitely know "I Wanna Be Like You" and I think I've only seen the Jungle Book one or two times. It's probably the most memorable song after "Bare Necessities".
I might pick this up, since I never finished collecting the manga (I have the first volume and that's it). It really is an adorable series. |

I honestly didn't mind the over-localazation in comedy anime/manga, if I laugh, then it's good.
The manga's funny, especially towards the end, but the anime is better. All comedy mangas seem to get funnier when they're animated. Nothing enhances a joke better then actual movement and giving voice to the dailouge. I liked the manga, but the anime is better. |

I despised the overlocalization of the manga, especially after having seen the subbed anime first, and seeing the japanese version of jokes that appeared americanized in the manga. If they have been fixed, I'll check it out.

I agree with earlier comments, having compared most of the first volume and the collection side-by-side; the localization is much better (and more consistent; the review mentions Osaka's accent, but in the original there are a couple of strips in volume 1 where she has a thick Brooklyn accent that's not in line with her presentation anywhere else). Some awkwardly-phrased dialogue has been cleaned up as well.
Also, while the review mentions problems with art reproduction early on, it does look better than it did in the original volumes (well, except the formerly color pages); in the original version, size reduction seems to have caused the dots in the tones to run together, leaving some sections with a blurry/muddy look. The new version is slightly larger, so the problem is reduced and those panels look better. |

This series is one of the best, and most honestly heartwarming (not to mention downright funny) manga I own. The characters will really grow on you, and by the end of the series you're actually sad to see them moving on with their (fictional) lives. Each of the characters is delightfully quirky, but in a way that makes you nod your head and think, "Yeah, I know someone like that."
I do have to agree that the artwork is rather simple, but I felt it actually helped the series rather than hurt it. On a side-note, I'm seriously creeped out right now. I was thinking about Azumanga Daioh almost all day at work (and chuckling to myself remembering the things that happen), then I come home and check ANN and this review is sitting there

I just read a bit of it at Waldenbooks. My god, they really did overhaul the localization. MUCH MUCH better this time around. I would seriously buy it
