Can't argue with Pan's Labyrinth being number one; that is one amazing film. It's nice to see people appreciating the great Spirited Away, too!

Yeah, Pan's Labyrinth is so good I think it might actually deter the usual "what anime didn't win the top spot in a list or a poll?!?! INJUSTICE" people from flooding this thread. |

Pan's Labyrinth and Spirited Away are the only two movies I've bothered to go see in a theater in the past decade

I personally don't see what was so great about Pan's Labyrinth. I like it, but I didn't think it was that great. Better than a lot of movies out there, and better maybe than Spirited Away, but Amelie, or anything in general by Jean-Pierre Jeunet?
I'm a biased Jeunet fan.

Those voters sure have short attention spans, no suprise there. Still, one would hope that something as overrated as "Amelie" would be forgtotten too.
Still, the least could have been worse than it is, and I really like "Spirited Away", so I'm not complaining too much. P.S. I guess "Foreign" means "Foreign Language" in this case. |

I liked Spirited Away. The only thing I did not like about Spirited Away was that the conclusion (similar to Princess Mononoke's) was short.
The conclusion was about 3 minutes of spoiler[Chihiro and Haku saying "Goodbye BFF. We'll meet again someday." and then Chihiro returning back to her parents and thinking that "it was like, u know, a dream or sumthing"  "]

Pan's Labyrinth looked like it had some decent set designs, but not much else; so I didn't bother catching it. I don't think it's fair to compare it to Spirited Away, because they're two different movies, but
I don't feel Del Toro was doing anything unique with his film. I'd say both he and Miyazaki were recycling. But I'll still check out Domu whenever Del Toro gets around to it. (Not sure about Hellboy 2...) |

Wow, now there's a poll I can agree with. All five of the movies mentioned in the summary are excellent (although my order of preference would differ). I would have thought the Lives of Others would have been higher on the list, but perhaps it's not as well known as the other top films. And it's great to see an animated movie make the list, especially a Miyazaki one.

Critics and awards rarely mean anything. For example, "The Departed" was a shitty remake, but AMPAS missed the boat on Marty's good films, so...
So did you see Alvin and the Chipmunks yet? Or did you already decide it wasn't going to be worth the trouble? |

I picked up Pan's Labyrinth for $10 at Target on sale. Best purchase I've made in recent times. The Pale Man was just a fantastic creature and the movie overall was captivating in the fusion of fairy tale and war.
I've never understood why Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was so popular though. |

I'm pretty lukewarm about this film by now, too, although I was obsessed with it when it when it first came out. I think it's a case of my just having seen it waaaaay too many times, so it's hard for me to appreciate it anymore. No complaints from me about the other films on that list, though. City of God is probably my all-time favorite film after Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. |

Faceless people on the internet are so much more intuitive, I know.
There is a complete difference in talking about the film and what it did compared to knowing your own tastes and what will/won't work |
