Shelf Life - Mushiboom

I've found that Mushishi isn't as intresting as it was anymore. Now I can only handle a few episodes at a time before I get tired of it. Still, it's a great show.

I'm also envious of that collection.

You know, I totally agree that the whole moral aspect of Death Note being really fascinating. It make for a great debate. In the right hands, could a Death Note be used to save hundreds of lives by taking a handful of them? Is it ever with the jurisdiction of one human being to end the life of another?

The problem with Death Note is that it gets those moral qualms out of the way after the first episode or two and devolves into Light vs. anyone who's following him. I mean, sure, I guess it's hard to focus on that moral aspect for the whole show, but once Light has proclaimed he's going to become the God of the new world, he doesn't even bother with the issue any more.

Please note that I did enjoy the show, I'm not really bashing it so much as expressing the part of me that sort of felt a little disappointing they didn't pursue that aspect of the show more after the initial couple of chapters/episodes.

As for sports themes, the old NBC stuff from the 90's (that may or may not have been written by John Tesh) is pretty good.

Not only did I just be a nerd, I used "old" and "90's" in the same sentence. I think I'll go cry now.

When was the last time I heard someone say bodacious?

One Piece is what i'm craving to pick up. It'll be my first touch of a real One Piece movie in America thats not a bootleg. It makes me feel all giddy and jolly inside.

I also hope this does well enough to get the movies before and after- I'd love to own the others.

I'll give Mushi-shi a chance in boxset form. Same with Death Note.
As for Mushi-shi is it just me or he smoking a joint on the cover?

I heard Mushi-shi has no real ending. There, I just saved you from a massive disappointment. Now you know what to expect.

If we're talking about sports themes, we have to mention the theme to Rocky!

And though most of you here are probably too young to remember it, for years and years, back in the dark days before cable when the big 3 networks were the only 3 and we only had, like, 5 channels to watch on TV, the voice of Jim McKay and the theme to ABC's Wide World of Sports meant we were about to see something besides baseball. Oddly, I couldn't find this theme anywhere on YouTube, aside from the "agony of defeat" part.

I really need to get caught up on Mushishi. I watched the first disc all the way through twice as soon as I got it and haven't gone back to the series since. I think this is why I usually wait until a whole series is out before I start buying it, but in this case I wanted to get the pretty artbox and first disc as soon as it was available.

Those are Tezuka Moderno figures, right? I didn't know there was a Pluto one. Great collection.

I'm more metal than most, so sports themes tend to leave me hanging. But if you give me "Burnface" from The Acacia Strain or "Pure Hatred" from Chimaira, I'll be more pumped up than the inflatable sports gear!

Also, if it were up to me, Mushishi and Death Note would be the next two huge-normous hits in the States. With Mushishi's one-off episodes that you can pick up any time plus Death Note's serialized psycho-drama, you really can't ask for anything more than that. Those two show off the versatility in anime, rather than another shonen title where muscled dudes stand around and yell at each other while "powering up." But instead of either of these taking off like gangbusters and inciting the next wave of anime fandom, we'll probably have to wait around for D.Gray-man. Crying or Very sad

The One Piece movie is an odd duck. It's a retelling of an old storyline, so you'd think it would be aimed at newbies who want to get familiar with the show without watching 100 episodes. But it's written in such a way that makes it less accessible to newcomers and much more geared at fans -- in other words, people who have already seen this story animated. So I'm not quite sure who it's meant to appeal to, but it did pretty well in Japan so I guess someone likes the idea.

The problem is that they're trying to condense an arc that took 42 episodes to tell in the tv series, down to the length of four episodes. It just can't be done without some serious pacing issues.

Personally, I'd rather see a movie with an original storyline. I hope FUNimation releases movie 6 before long. That's a terrific movie even for non-fans.

I remember back during the 80s a couple ice skaters from Asia skated to Hisaishi's music from Nausicaa. I used to watch the Olympics more often and would always play name that tune for the ice skaters since I have an extensive OST collection. I agree the Brisco County theme song is really amazing and I remember how painful the wait for Friday night was back when Brisco and X-files were played back to back on Fox.

I actually like the Death Note anime better than the manga. I don't know how to explain it, but there's a different kind of excitement watching it than reading it. Maybe it's just because I'm so impacient about reading manga...
