The new artwork kinda makes me cringe... I don't know why, but I feel like they're violating a classic.  Like when Disney was making sequels to Peter Pan and Cinderella.

Uh, as the article says, parts of both Tezuka versions of the manga have been already published in English. |

Uh, as the article says, parts of both Tezuka versions of the manga have been already published in English. |
The English versions are only available in Japan as bilingual manga. (Japanese in the bubbles, English translations in the margins.) Princess Knight was never properly brought over to the US. |

It was a couple of chapters from a multi-volume series not what I would really consider being fulling published in the U.S. |

Never said it was "fully."  Notice that Gatsu's typical negative first post doesn't sound so dire once all of these goalpost-moving qualifiers are added:

And you have to go to Kinokuniya to find those import versions, which means S+H would probably bring it back to American prices.

That was the funny thing. Even with S+H, they were lower than American prices.

I'm guessing because they're essentially legal scantalations, not necessarily reflecting the style Tezuka was going for like the Shojo Beat version.

Again with the watered-down qualifiers, posted after the fact.

Is this adaption going to be wonderful or terrible? Hmm.
I really want to see Princess Knight stateside... Preferably the Tezuka version. This new one is very cutesy as well, but I have my doubts. |

The bilingual versions were available from numerous importers, and are reviewed- they translated one of the versions of the series completely [Tezuka did a few versions through the years], I think one of the Nakayoshi versions. So while they were made for the Japanese market, they're not impossible to find, Jason Thompson's Manga Encyclopedia reviews them [I have some of the bilingual Doraemon volumes- where it's all in english, but with side commentary in Japanese to help Japanese people learn english. It's pretty decent].
In addition to that, there's french language version of both the manga and the anime available here in Canada. Here's hoping Vertical or VIZ will translate more of the manga. |
