and no complaints can be offered about the singing ability of the actresses called upon to sing.

Yes, I was actually surprised at the singing in the dub since it has been, overall, pretty mediocre. They did a good job there and upped my opinion of the dub in general.

this volume's bonus short, which provides a “what happens next” look at two significant characters in the wake of episode 13's climax.

I laughed... this and the Juliet short in vol 2 are both gold Laughing .

About the character development; I agree that this has been the strongest thus far of the series. I've already seen vol 5, and damn... all I can say is prepare yourself; eps 17 & 18 will be sure to stick you where it hurts Crying or Very sad .

Nice review...

It's sad that the only thing that keeps me watching this is the supporting cast rather than the main one, there are a few homages to the HiME series though it felt rather forced to me, the series needs more Mai and Mikoto though, their presence is quite missed.

The plot kind of improves here and it's a lot better in the next volume, but all these late improvements still don't make up for the weak leading roles. I didn't care much for the potential of romance between spoiler[Sergei and Arika, but it's probably stemming from the fact that Sergei always got on my nerves.]

I'm really enjoying this series. In fact, I actually like it better than the original. Shocked

While I miss Mai and Makoto, I have a feeling that a rabbit may be pulled out of the hat there.

And I like the "romance" between spoiler[Sergei and Arika. She doesn't understand what her heart is leading her to and he's fighting the fact that 1) she's the same age as his daughter and 2) the fact that he's being forced into something that his honor finds repulsive but duty/loyalty/oaths are forcing him to do.]

Kind of like how towards the 2/3 mark Hime kinda gave you a kick to baggins and got serious. I just hope it ends strongly as Hime did.

Well Mai gets her time in it later (so says my Otome art book with pictures of her in it so I'm assuming it's accurate) on so keep your eyes open.

I have to agree with you Raven, but then again I liked most of the supporting cast in Hime better too. I was always a Natsuki and Shizuru fan (ShizNat for the win heh)myself and that has not changed at all in this series. I actually kind of like their personalities in Otome more then Hime (though at this point I still rate Hime higher overall). The series is fun and has enough action to keep it exciting but I agree that without the good supporting cast of characters the show would be lacking in terms of the story. I'm hoping that like with Hime once it hits the last 1/3 of the series it'll pick up the pace and really get serious. That was what really made Hime enjoyable for me so if Otome doesn't follow suit I'll be a bit disappointed. But from everything I've read and heard it does indeed kick ya where it counts and really gets moving.

It was during these episodes that I actually started to enjoy Otome despite wanting to slap most of the leads. Unfortunately, the plot developments right after this and, well, most of the rest of the series, were just disappointing.
