I like Kitoh's stuff although his works are always a bit strange and disturbing at times. I just don't know if Kitoh really fits into a magazine where Toriyama and Katsura are being published.

Have you read Zetman? He definitely fits in with Katsura's recently work.
I agree on not seeing him doing shonen stuff now, but he did debut in Shonen Sunday...

Do you think this might herald a return to a more "mainstream" magazine once Bokurano's run in Ikki is finished? Or maybe doing more than one monthly at a time?

I always thought that the anime Narutaru's failure plus lackluster sales of the tankobons kind of got Kitoh kicked back from Afternoon "to the minors" in Ikki, and now that Bokurano is doing so well (anime, novel rewrite, both doing well), I wonder if he'll get a more prominent spot again in one of the bigger mags.

Maybe things don't work that way, I'm not sure.

I've never been convinced there was a great difference between Afternoon and Ikki; they target the same audience. Afternoon just has several successful long running titles, while Ikki is still looking for a few more of those.
I assumed the Ikki editors had deliberately recruited him from Afternoon because he was a known, successful author.

He has been doing regular short stories for Erotics F - which is much more underground stuff.

But you're right that the Bokura no anime's success has probably landed him this gig.

I think it's not so much a difference in content, but in prestige and age of the publication.

Ikki's been around since, um... April 2003
Afternoon KC's been around since ... 1988?

which one has the higher circulation? No clue, but I can make an educated guess Smile.

Afternoon has a significantly higher circulation; if memory serves, afternoon ran around 50 thousand, while Ikki was more like 16.
Neither particularly large.

But when Ikki went monthly they instantly grabbed several authors; Jiro Matsumoto, Kitoh Mohiro, and what's his name, draws Rideback - who went so far as to abandon the book he was writing for Comic Birz, jumping ship to Ikki. There were a couple of others as well. I don't think moving to Ikki was a step down at all; I think they were all chosen as authors with proven successes who would help Ikki establish itself.
Now if they would only let Kiba Kouichi do something more than short stories...

I think there's a pretty noticeable difference actually. I mean they're both the "alternative" magazine for their respective publishers, but in general Afternoon seems more mainstream in its focus (or rather more otaku-oriented). Can you really imagine stuff like Seraphic Feather or Gunsmith Cats fitting into Ikki? Of course Afternoon has a lot more pages to fill.

I meant a difference in prestige, but that is a good point; Afternoon sort of overlaps the space between Ultra Jump and Ikki.

So basically Toriyama's writing and Katsura's artwork. I think that works out quite well.

Can't be any worse than Kamio Youko doing a series in the same magazine.
