What? Rigardo's catlike form being the weakest? Come on! The guy's a lion! ROOOOAAAARRRRR!

Isley's form was cool and all, but Luciela's feline variation was more hot. Grrroooowl!

Rigardo would be one of my favorite said villains from the series. I was surprised though how the story did branch off from focusing on Clare like mentioned in the review, but the story does itself justice with the characters that are represented in the absence of Clare.

A negative the reviewer should have mentioned is the three month wait between volumes. Yah I realize there are tone of scans out there and it is very tempting to get them. I do have Vol. 12 preordered though.

Another thing that makes the wait hard is that it only takes me about half an hour to read a volume. This may be due to having seen the anime which, until about the Rigardo fight, had been a near panel for panel recreation of the manga.

It should also be noted that this volume is where the anime and manga split and go on different paths. Very different paths. Please skip the last four episodes of the anime and read the manga instead.

Viz Media's production of the title under its Shonen Jump Advanced label thankfully translates all of the sound effects, as many would have been incomprehensible otherwise

I think they ought to take a Jojo's Bizarre Adventure approach and just add small English translations next to the original SFX instead of editing in entire English sounds (which tend to be pretty silly - it sure takes me out of the mood when I'm reading Claymore or Battle Angel and in the middle of an intense battle the words "FAP FAP FAP" pop up).

Anyway, good review. I ought to get around to buying these (still got other series to finish off first).

Keep in mind that the actual comic series itself is run in a monthly magazine, which means that it takes a month for them to get each chapter prepared for a new release. It would be understandable but three months time is actually a good time frame. You're lucky to get a three month time frame release in Japan.

Most manga releases in the States have a four-month gap (or more) in between volumes, so that negative would then have to be put in almost every review.

While the first part of this statement is true, I do not agree with the second part. The last four anime episodes are plenty good enough; they just angle things in a different direction.

Sorry to nitpick, but Viz romanized Rigardo's name as "Rigaldo."

Nitpicking aside, that was a good review, Key. I liked the comment you made about the action being quite easy to follow. In fact, that's one of the first things I noticed about this series when read volume 1 several months ago. So many other action series I'd read prior to that were quite difficult to follow, making Claymore a breath of fresh air in that regard.

I have to say, I can't entirely agree with the assertion that Claymore is light on character development. Unless, maybe, you're referring to just this volume (as opposed to the series as a whole) I feel like there is plenty of character development offered in Claymore, and I regularly read Shoujo manga. In fact, I was remarking to a fellow fan of the series the other day how well Yagi manages to make us attached to characters despite the fact that they often are mowed over like flies against a windshield. And certainly, Clare herself has a great deal of development in terms of her past with Maria and her relationship with Raki. While I wouldn't rank Claymore as having the greatest character development of all time, I certainly feel it gives it's fair share, and definitely has enough to allow the audience to feel attachment toward the protagonists.

Also, on an unrelated note, I really appreciate the fact that Yagi doesn't fill this manga with tasteless nudity as well as action and that all of the Claymores are fully (and fairly practically) clothed. Go Yagi!

Yes, the latter comment is the case.

Um, there's nothing terribly practical about the Claymore uniforms; it's all for style, and that armor offers them little real protection. They just aren't completely impractical.

To be fair, I'm not sure it would be practical for the claymores to wear tons of armor, given the fact that their arms go off in crazy directions and shit like that. But then, I guess it's mostly awakened claymores that change their shape, so you may be right.

On the other hand, with something that regenerates like a claymore, they might be better off not wearing a lot of heavy armor to maintain their speed. (Though, given their strength, perhaps the heaviness of armor wouldn't effect their speed?)

Mostly I'm just glad that they're dressed tastefully (not that I have anything against naked bodies; I'm just pretty sick of the whole fanservice warrior bit) and don't have boobs the size of melons. (I'm looking at you, Tenjo Tenge.)
