Aw, what a shame, I was really looking forward to attending, too. And here I thought Buffalonians were immune to snowstorms.
That last sentence shows some optimism, I'm hoping the best for the staff and whatever they've got planned. |

Well this area is infamous (and often overstated) for its high level of snowstorms, due to lake-effect snow from Lake Erie. This was a pretty average year, not like say... 1977
Usually the snow isn't much of a hindrance, not so this time. It appears the con was closed on account of the campus being inaccessible, the organizers didn't have any say in the matter. From what I gather on the website, it looks like they're hoping to reschedule for a later date this year. |

So's Cleveland, although the more severe snowstorms in Ohio happens in the northeastern counties of Lake, Geauga, and Ashtabula counties - the western fringe of the so-called "snow belt" (which also includes Buffalo and upstate New York). We're getting pretty pounded by snow right now. |

Actually, the lake is mostly frozen so we're not getting anymore lake effect this year. This crap is coming up from the south. Columbus, OH got about the same snowfall from this one so far. And sure, the I-90 corridor gets hammered a lot and can make driving a nightmare, but it made for a great game of hockey

From what I've heard from friends and family who lived up that, I should have known it was Buffalo. Yeah. The lake effect and it's location just make it a frequent target for some of the worst snowstorms in the country.

I've always thought that winter cons in the north were a horrible idea. There's too much of a chance of travel plans being canceled or the con itself being canceled. Seems like the organizers are taking a gamble every time. Sure, some of the bigger cons could probably just hold the con anyway, but these smaller college cons have to be feeling it.

Thats kind of like saying summer cons in the South are a bad idea due to the risk of tropical cyclone. -t |

Actually, it snows more at around freezing than it does at say 20 below. Up in Montreal, where we usually get less snow than Buffalo, this year has seen significantly more snowfall than recent years. ...I'm loving it  (but I do feel bad for everyone who worked on or planned to attend Neo NohCon.)

Ah, Katsucon 2003. I've heard the stories of that one, but I unfortunately wasn't on the con circuit yet at that time. In fact, when that storm hit, I was in FL on a school trip. We stayed like four extra days. Muahahaha.

I take it you're a lover of snow, tempest? Sometimes you have to think of the safety of everybody who is involved with the event, be it con-goers or staff, better to be safe than sorry. My brother goes to college in St Louis and they had some snow problems out there not too long ago, although he was enjoying it. We don't have a lot of snow out here in Orange County
