I actually thought of Yu Yu Hakusho before I realized the reviewer was referring to Bleach.,

It's sad, in spite of how lame and hackneyed this sounds, I am too much in love with ZOMG THERE'S AN ALTERNATE WORLD plot devices to not be mildly intrigued.

I don't plan to spend money on it but I might try to find it a library or something someday.

And I'm too much in love with Shirogane not to be interested in it. Also, I heard that the manga was better than the anime, but it doesn't seems like a whole lot better and since the anime was pretty bad, I don't think I will be reading or watching more of this anytime soon. Proof that a cool main character alone can't save a bad series from itself.

You know I might be crazy, but it seems that the only thing wrong here is that is resembles Bleach. I'm getting tired of things being ragged on because they are similar to something else. Can't they be judged by their individual take on the theme? Am I the only one who can see the forest for the trees?

I totally agree with you 100% and you are not crazy. It wouldn't make much of a difference if there are people who haven't seen Bleach and instead saw another supernatural story before even coming across it. The fact is that it isn't uncommon for stories to have similarities with each other not to mention having the same genres, its just the author's take of it thats all.
I on the other hand became so interested when I read the first few chapters of Monochrome Factor that I wanted to read more, the only down part is that Tokyopop licensed it.. and I'm not really fond of their translations and the length it takes for a new volume to release.
I was really excited that the Anime was released and that they did a pretty good job in following the Manga, except for some minor changes where one of the characters step in with the other and the fact that Shirogane in the Anime appears more intimate towards Akira then in the Manga.
I'm really sad to say that I haven't been following much on Bleach and have been falling way behind on the story. Though even if I were, I wasn't really watching it for Ichigo, I'm more interested in Ishida.
I'm an open minded person and I always watch/read whatever series that comes my way. What determines if its a good series is not about the genre but the characters and the story that builds it.
People have different taste and there are a lot of stories with the same genres to satisfy everyone, so it is either like it or hate it but you can't stop people from creating the stories that they want to share with everyone.

I agree that every manga/anime should be judged for it's take on the genre but many people are just tired or seeing this story over and over again we have seen it with a boy and a girl, two girls, two boys and a large mixture of both. The first time I heard about this series I thought I was going to be a yaoi that tried to add some sort of half-baked super natural story so it wouldn't be regarded as mindless fluff but I was relived to find out it wasn't.
It by far is not the best of the genre but not the worst at all (you all know it gets a lot worst.) Plus I love shirogane's character and I always seem to love shirogane's in general lol

As it stands I think that the people choose what they want to watch. Some people aren't as criticizing about plots and loopholes. They just watch the series for fun, as any anime fan would.

I like the series, the anime even which is what I saw first. I think it's cute how Shirogane seems to have an affectionate attraction to Akira. But then again, I'm also a yaoi fan so that may have something to do with it. Either way, I like the constructive criticism, but don't take it too far or nobody will want to watch this series for what it is; the Author's outtake on this genre.

You also have to realize, it's the first volume. Things change, plots develop and new scenarios will appear as the story goes on. Sure, some things seem the same and we've 'seen in all before' but that is true of a lot of things that are out there. The story is already up to volume 5 in Japan and things are different from Bleach or YYH or whatever manga that MF is said to be copying from. The reason why the author uses the "lame excuse" at the beginning is because of the plot in later volumes. It is not revealed yet for a reason. It isn't the author copping out.

I try to enjoy a story for the story, not for the things it resembles. If that was the case, no one would enjoy much of anything written or shown on tv/movies/etc. Basing judgments on just the first volume does not give the author or the story enough credit.
