Otoboku was good, can't wait for the next volume. Also, nearly all the girls are good looking. And if Mizuho was really a girl, I would be attracted to him. But, he isn't. and thats why it's interesting.

Well I have to say this is only the second time i have ever seen gender switching manga get a good review. The first being I my me strawberry eggs. I never really knew how to take this genre like who is it for? Girls? Guys?

Aww...the lack of shelfworthiness for One Piece disappoints me a little. I suppose it is a matter of taste, though; one of the main reasons I love the show so much is precisely because it's so "cartooney." I've never come across a show that's so unabashedly and overwhelmingly fun. Luffy's easily my favorite shounen protagonist. He doesn't angst, he doesn't whine, he doesn't have existential crises, he doesn't obsess over powering himself up over a dozen episodes; he's just...Luffy. I'm over 130 episodes into this show, and it just keeps getting more enjoyable and more epic as arc after arc goes by. I've been meaning to get my hands on this box set since the day it was released.
I've read several mixed reviews about Gotham Knight, but that still won't stop me from picking up a copy of it. Getting to hear Kevin Conroy reprise the role again makes any of its shortcomings more than worth it.

This must be a week of controversial critiques.  I'll admit the Animatrix might not hold up now, given that the hype for the series in general has faded. But they were very impressive when they first arrived, and they demonstrated the possibilities for anime across the board. Unfortunately, I still can't comment on GK, since I'm busier than I thought I'd be this week.  I will agree with you on OP, though.

Considering Otoboku is based on a bishoujo ero-game, it's clearly aimed for guys. I mean, it's almost every Japanese male otaku's dream to dress up like a girl, go to an all-girl (possibly Catholic) school, and create a harem while making the girls feel like they're lesbians!

When I first started watching One Piece, I felt very much the same as Bamboo. The Kuro arc was when I first started to feel a bit stronger toward the series and by the time I got to the Arlong arc, I was fairly hooked. It takes a while but the zany cartoony elements grow on you.
Now if only Funimation would license the 6th movie. That thing is freaking awesome squared. Premium grade nightmare fuel at it's best! This review makes me even more unsure about buying the Gotham Knight release. (Maybe I'll wait until I've seen the movie.) As for the other releases, I'm not much for live-action Japanese films outside of horror. It's not a matter of the language in this case so much as a preference for freaky nightmare fuel. Otoboku would intrigue me but lack of an English dub makes it a no-sale. Oh well, more money for Funimation who continue to give me what I want, though that doesn't make me go away. Ten points if you get the reference above. |

I love One piece as well.I'm still only 210 episodes in (since 2007,I have yet to continue).I've laughed,I've cried,I've cheered One Piece gets intense.It's truly is a grand adventure,worthy of a big U.S. audience.

I was about to agree with the trepidation at picking up GK, but that comment on Otoboku is more important (and surprisingly missing from the review.) My initial impression was that the glowing review, phantom line below the last paragraph, and lack of the word "none" (or other such "maybe next week" statement) under Shelf Worthy meant this just got misfiled. Lacking a dub, however, explains the step-down in rating. Points off for not alphabetizing, but the BD volume brings the net score well back up into "nice collection" territory. |

I can understand why One Piece got only a "Rental Worthy," because at first I also was a little put off by the cartoon-ish elements. However, I was definitely hooked by episode 20, and a die hard fan by the Arlong arc. One Piece is my favorite shounen anime and manga series hands down. The colorful characters and designs included.
I am insanely jealous of the Takashi Murakami artbook in the first set of pictures. Unfortunately I am a cheapskate and will always try to get something on sale so I don't have to pay full price for it. I will own it someday, hopefully. |

One Piece is a great shounen series. One of the best/better ones, and you could easily do worse.
I guess this could be considered spoilery (though no specific plot elements are revealed, I discuss the story abstractly): spoiler[But my major problem with the series is that, no matter how "epic" any of the story arcs get, ultimately, we end up in the same place we started. All the characters we met in that story arc are left behind, and we have just our crew again, nothing different. I guess what I'm saying is, no one dies, the main characters always win. And because of that, I can't really take it seriously. I know Luffy's going to beat the bad guy, I know Zoro's not actually going to die, I know Nami will make it out in time, etc. So, it's that and the fact that each story arc feels too disconnected from the previous one -- the events of one don't really affect the events of another. Granted, I'm only in the Skypiea arc, but I doubt this formula changes much from here on out.] |

I heard One piece really takes off after Skypiea.I'm right after the Skypiea arc,transitioning into the next arc.Ep 210 or so.I haven't continued from there.I was pissed when ANN showed a few spoilers on the site when they were promoting the Alabasta movie.Movie 8.And the new character as a PVC.

Well I loved One Piece and Gotham Knight. The One Piece movies are also awesome.
Those PVCs are rare and that character wasn't the newest character to the crew if that's any consolation. People do die in One Piece for those complaining of no deaths. |
