And this is why I love Dai Mahou Touge. The unrestrained cruelty in this series is what makes it so vastly different than other comedies out there, who get laughs from panty shots and romantic misunderstandings. And as I've said in the Dokoro-chan responses, this series is so much better in content and overall wit. |

I absolutely love dark, twisted humor, especially that which mocks cultural cliches. I have moved this to the top of my Netflix queue.

I am just sorry that they did not include the 4 omakes. A shame since they totalled 10 minutes in runtime. That stuff with the mushrooms makes me cringe every time. Discovering how the poor are treated and exactly how Punie-chan's mom Queen Esmerelda rules is interesting to say the least.

I liked Dokuro-chan a lot. It was a fun perverse violence filled ride, but it still had an underlying niceness to it.
I loved Punie-Chan much more. The humor and parody here wil stand up a lot longer due to being better, completely remorseless, and a heck of a lot smarter. I would say for the price, both series are worth having, but if you had to pick one, make it this one. Punie's "transformation" phrase (which the review strangely did not mention) that she brighly says while smiling tells you all you need to know: "Lyrical Tokarev, Kill Them All" |

I had never heard of this before but after reading the review it actually sounds interesting. Dokuro-chan sounds interesting as well.

This actually adorns the DVD packaging  MB's disc is pretty nifty, and the sinister tone of the show while still adhering to magical girl formula makes for a great show. I loved how quickly Punie's VA could switch from cutesy to sinister FOTNS villan giving a speech- while lowbudget, they did some really effective things with her expressions, and it adds to the fun. The fact that the supporting characters acknowledge and give into her evil adds extra to it, as Tetsuko realizes the horror of her best friend, but then just sort of goes along with it. There's also some great references to other "Majokko" magical girl shows [ie- shows where a Princess from Magic Land goes to earth to train, like Majokko Meguchan or Minky Momo. Let's just say, Punie's mom must be a good van driver]

I love dark humor as much as the next guy, but sub-only? Are they TRYING to alienate potential fans?

The general consensus is that is a wonder that both Dokuro and Punie were licensed at all. And I am happy with that. |
