A pretty good start. Brian's style is very distinctive and will take some getting used to.

I wasn't surprised that Shinji was mentioned in the Hey, Answerfans question. I was happy to see some Rumiko Takahashi characters getting mentioned as well. But the best pick was Momo. I thought people would have hated Sae more, but the arguments against Momo were quite good.

And it seems like Brian has a penchant for animals as well. I should see if my old digital camera is working.

So far so good Brian. I enjoyed the column and learned a little from this as well.

This is safe to say Answerman is in capable hands. Though you said you cat meow's like a pirate. In One Piece, there actually is a bunch pirates that did meow. Captain kuro's bunch of pirates, during the Usoop arc.

Thank you for the job well done, I look forward to reading this weekly from now on. Thanks again for the great work.

Over the past couple of years I've been a part of both Western comic and anime/manga fandom. I've noticed, however, that while comic fans seem generally accepting of anime/manga (having sections for it in magazines, at forums, etc), anime fandom does not seem so accepting of Western comics. Obviously there are exceptions to every rule, but while most comic fans I have encountered seem to express an interest in both mediums (or have at least tried both), I've noticed many anime fans declaring their dislike of Western comics and their 'musclebound superheroes' (there's more than that, guys!), and quite a few say that they have never even tried comics, but dislike them anyway. Do you have any ideas as to why this may be? Am I simply hanging out in all the wrong places?

These kind of people are missing out on a lot of great stuff, "Preacher" ,Neil Gaiman's "The Sandman" ,"Trasmetropolitian" "Queen and Country", "The Walking Dead" and of course Jeff Smith's "Bone" and the classic "Watchmen"

I have two dedicated anime channels on cable, Hero TV (dubbed in Tagalog) and Animax-Asia (mostly dubbed in English, though they're currently showing Slam Dunk dubbed and subtitled in different timeslots), so i can't complain much about not being able to use most English-translated anime streams. TV5's current weekday evening anime lineup is great (with weekend marathon reruns). R1 DVD boxsets make up the shortfall.

Speaking of Toward the Terra, I was pleasantly surprised when I realized that the English dub of the TV series on Animax was done by Filipino voice actors, probably under Telesuccess Productions. Managed to ID Charmaine Cordoviz (as Jomy), Dada Carlos, and Michiko Azarcon (using her British accent). Nice to see local voice talent getting international exposure, but the dub is kinda flat compared to Tagalog dubs they've done.

I was skimming the Answerfan responses, seeing basically all the same stuff, and lo and behold, I come across a name and show I never expected to see on the worst of anything lists.

Jomy of Toward the Terra? Really?

But reading the writer's reply made me realize this comes out of the same vein as Shinji haters (I also really liked Shinji's characterization when I first watched Evangelion). Yes, Jomy whines and gets a whole lot of decisions wrong. Guess what: he's fourteen years old, is pulled straight from a world that makes sense into a world that turns all preconceived notions around, and is made the leader of a dying people in a few months of learning that everything he knew was a lie.

He screws up? No way! It's not like being good at your job comes from making bad choices and learning from them or anything...(sarcasm)

Toward the Terra gets a few things wrong with consistency, but characterization is not one of its failing points.

I have to agree with the guy for a good bit. Jomy does complain for a good bit in the 80s movie as well.

I only saw the movie version (thank goodness it got a DVD release not too long ago) so I have no comment on the TV series. Then again I should watch the TV series sooner or later (I did like the movie), then again with three TV series I'm currently watching and tons of DVDs/Laserdisc OVAs next to me I have tons to watch first before the TV series. Razz

Doofus Kicks... long jumps... I usually get my manga online, so I had no idea that a trip to the bookstore had transformed into an athletic competition. O_o

Anyway, that was a great start to the new era of Answerman. The extra week delay was worth the wait, in my opinion. Keep it up.

What do you have on LD? Been thinking of borrowing or buying my great aunt's LD player, then hunt down some anime LDs for stuff that isn't on DVD or VHS.

Well I'm already sold on this column's new writer. Those are two of my all time favorites and I think they have plenty of universal appeal, so curious readers own it to themselves to check those out.

I always call those stupid manga aisle readers "manga cows". And I'm still waiting for a good opportunity to go Manga Cow Tipping.

I'm tempted to write in to the worst con experience. Hmmm. Mine's a little more personal though, so I'll probably need to chose a different one than what I'm thinking of.

(FYI: an essay I have for school is dangling over my head like chinese water torture, and I'm actually wanting to write an essay for fun? yeah. power of anime)

Actually, Brian, Geoff Johns' current run in Superman has been good, albiet a little too Silver Age-ish for some tastes (but with Superman, you can be a little lighter than with Batman).

I just wish DC and Marvel weren't always trying to do some huge crossover event, especiall DC with its "crisis" obsession. For Zod's sake, it was two decades between Crisis on Infinite Earths and Infinite Crisis, why did they only wait a couple of years before they broke out "Final Crisis" (which I doubt will be "final" in any real sense)? And then there's "Batman R.I.P." and Marvel's "Secret Invasion" storyline.

It's headache inducing.

I feel the same way. I don't know that the Mu were necessarily all hyper intelligent either. I think a lot of it can be chalked up to experience and having those psychic powers. Jomy kinda got caught in the whole "you're the most powerful" situation and got stuck with leadership. All too often, leaders in entertainment tend to be the strongest in their abilities but not necessarily the smartest.

Manga cows: As a former bookstore employee, I have never come across manga cows. However, my boss there once told me about this one girl who came in the store (This happened before I started working there) and she would take some manga books off the shelves, head into the back of the store, and READ THEM AND DRAW PICTURES OF THE CHARACTERS. One day, the boss went up to her and said, "Why don't you just buy the books if you like them so much?" Smart man. He never told me if the chica got banhammered or went to another store to do her manga cow shit, but fortunately, I never had to deal with that crap. Worst I ever had to deal with was the manga section getting disorganized (It was in such a chaotic state that I just went and alphabetized everything my very first day there; shit was SO cash) and people pronouncing the word "manga" wrong.

Manga and American comic/graphic novel fans hating each other: I've never seen this anywhere. I haven't read any Western comics since I was a kid, so I wouldn't know much about what's come out in the past ten or so years on our side of the Pacific. Still, nerd-on-nerd hate must end. Except against furries.

Well, nice try on your first week on the job, Brian. Looking forward to the next column!
