To clarify, the award is for "Best Graphic Story", with "graphic story" defined as any science fiction or fantasy narrative in graphic form appearing for the first time in 2008. Thus, not restricted to graphic novels. So you if you think that the July 29 2008 Anime News Nina strip was a single story, and was the best graphic SF or F story of the year, and if you were a member of this year's Worldcon, you could nominate it. If you want to nominate a manga, you should select some set of volumes or chapters, ending in 2008, that constitutes a single story, as you see it. In my view, that would usually be some set of chapters, but might be an entire series, if the series ended in 2008. "Appearance for the first time in 2008" in this case means one of three things

Important clarification: The category will not be added for 2010 onwards unless ratified at this year's WSFS business meeting (which is part of Worldcon and open to all members). Every Worldcon is allowed one optional Hugo category at its discretion, but permanent changes have to be approved by two successive Worldcons.
A very important factor in adding it as a permanent category will be how many Worldcon members choose to nominate or vote in that category. So, anyone still trying to make up their mind about whether or not to get at least a supporting membership and participate... please do!! |
