Has anyone ever seen his film Mabarosi? I think that was his best work so far. But rarely do I find someone else who's seen it also...

Well at least the guy keeps his lungs in good shape. I can only imagine (since I have yet to own one) that it takes a lot of air to fill up that much volume. Could write a play for Broadway about the love of filling up ones doll with all that lung power!

I vaguely remember watching After Life when it came out, but generally, I've always gotten the sense that unless you're *really* into Japanese indie cinema, this guy is pretty much unknown. Or he's given off a sort of Jim Jarmusch vibe - people might know the name, but good luck finding anyone who's actually seen something he's directed.

I've seen Nobody Knows, Maborosi and After Life actually, watched them in a film class I took a few semesters ago. I enjoyed all 3 movies, but After Life was my favorite, it really struck a chord with me.

He's a great filmmaker imo, and this new project of his seems interesting.
