That cat keychain looked interesting. I am surprized Pikman is still in the media, I figured most people had forgotten about it already.

Great article, I've always wondered what the female-oriented doujin events are like.

One thing, though: "Sokubaikai", not "Sakubaikai". Anime catgrin + sweatdrop

The west end of Tokyo Big site might be more female-oriented, but it's practically the same for male fans, probably over on the east end. The same.. but just more smelly.

Thanks for the report.
I sold my doujinshi at Harucomi from help from my friends, I regret not being there.

It's nice to see it from a foreigner's POV. I do agree it's kinda like North American conventions.. but the atmosphere is totally different.(I've been in 4 events in Japan including Comiket). The pr0n thing tho, on the east side walking down the male's area, I saw a guy holding onto his kid's hand walking by a banner of a girl on a poster who was naked saved for the stars covering her nipples. Anime hyper; But yeah what the doujinshi-ka said about the workload, all about how much you wanna put into the books.

The picture seem to indicate that general traffic flow is a lot less hellish... navigating through the crowds on boys' day on comiket is like trying to thread needles for two hours straight.

It'd probably be refreshing to go to one of these, just to have a subdued ambiance in comparison to North American conventions.

Can't exactly hop on the next flight, though. Ah well, one can dream.

Great article Evan! Really informative and interesting. Gives one insight into just how important dojinshi is to the fan base in Japan.

You are quite right. I don't get to move on my own free will... these men directs where I'm going and I'm getting touched on 360 sides of my body. Even though I'm a girl I don't care too much but I just care about their smell... yeesh! lol

Heh, thanks kransom. It was actually sokubaikai when I wrote it... I think my spellcheck is acting weird. *fixes*

I checked all the halls and it was mostly females-only at Harucomi, but I've heard Comiket is different. I'm really, really looking forward to checking out Comiket in the future (despite the nightmarish crowds and foul smell... Japan really needs to start selling stick deodorant for men, SERIOUSLY).

Maybe someone could set up a deodorant booth at Comiket. Anime hyper

This was really interesting to read Evan. Everyone always focuses on the male side of these events and I've always wondered about the female. I really appreciated the fact that you kept an open mind about everything and just presented it as it was.

Ooo I wasn't at Harucomi but I was aware that Jump was at nishi so I thought majority of the female fans where there lol. Yeah, like how everyone said who experienced it, I waited in line outside in winter time at 5am til the opening time at 10am at Fuyucomi and it takes an hour to get in depending on the line you're in ..... I'm thinking you're looking forward to that too!? lol

and yes...deodorant for men at Comiket is a dream come true; C'mon guys lets start a business there for that lol (just deodorant for men booths at manga stores too man... it reeks in there and I can't get to my pr0n. It's BAD right after events lol)

A well written piece, Evan. I'd only read things about Comiket before this, and while I knew other dōjinshi conventions like Haru Comic City were popular, I knew nothing about them. Thanks for writing about a part of manga fandom I'd yet to learn about (and good job at not letting the primarily female crowd bother you).

Great article.

I went to the Comic City in Osaka last October, and I almost had the same experience as you, a guy in a sea of fujoshi.

It was extremely well organised and I somehow knew I was not in Australia when people actually stayed in line and I saw nobody cut in when they started letting people in, especially in the way they set up the line it would've been very easy to cut in and such. It was kinda funny cause the girl I was sitting next to in line seemed very calm and collected when we were waiting but as soon as we got in the door she rushed straight to the Shonen Jump section.

I was able to find some doujinshi I was interested in (Pokemon, Jojo's and Doraemon crossed with Fist Of The North Star to name a few). And I seemed to have only found one table that was actually 18+ material that was aimed at guys and it was amusingly a Nodame Cantabile table.

But the thing that made me definately sure that it was mainly an event aimed at girls was the toilet situation. When I found the "male" toilet in the hall and walked inside and I immediately saw a line of girls, so I turned and walked out. I needed to ask a volunteer to find out that the guys had to actually go outside out of the hall to go to the toilet.

I also managed to get some amusing flyers for events such as the Supernatural only event and the Ultraman only event (complete with two Ultraman's embraced on the flyer).

Well that was interesting to read since my other experience with a dojinshi conventions was what I had read in Genshiken (which sounds rather accurate actually). I'm intrigued on how different anime conventions are so different on the different sides of the pacific. From the (very few) conventions I have been to in the US, most of the art I saw in the Artists Alley was fan art, not actual fan comics, and it sounds like that is reversed here. And I think I do like American conventions better, I just enjoy cosplaying too much.
