I really enjoyed the first 2 episodes I saw on Funimation's site, so I'm glad to see the 2nd volume get a good review. One thing I'm curious about is how it will end: the series has a huge amount of characters and story elements introduced in the first 2 episodes alone, and it's only a 13 (14 counting an OVA) episode series. I hope they manage to pull things together into a satisfactory ending.

On a side note...

Performances as weak as mediocre are few and far between, while on the high end J. I'm not sure exactly what you were trying to say they, but it seems something got messed up in the formating of the review. It sounds like you were trying to comment on a weak and/or mediocre dub performance you noticed.

Actually, there were 3 OVA episodes, making it 16. They're doing 4 episodes a DVD, so 1-4 on DVD 1 etc. etc.

Ah, cool, I was mistaken. More Baccano! episodes than I realized sounds quite nice to me.

And you will see that even if they did not do those 3 extra DVD episodes the ending in episode 13 would still be extremely satisfactory. The 3 extra episodes are just icing on the cake. Smile

On another note this review makes me sad because I am still waiting for my DVD to ship which was put on back-order. Sad

Well, deepdiscount finally got me mine last Friday, but sadly, Darker than Black Vol. 3 is STILL in backorder. Sad

I'm actually trying to resist watching it, as after seeing the first volume, I knew this would be a show I was going to love, so now I'm waiting until I get Vol. 3 and 4 before watching anymore so I can just marathon it. Smile

I blind bought volumes 1 and 2 plus artbox, based solely on the trailers from Funimation, and I'm very pleased with this show. The flow of the story is a tad confusing, but it's ultimately satisfying. I absolutely love historical period fiction, so Baccano! is a wonderful pleasure for me to watch.

We need more shows like this, with a compelling story and tons of wonderful characters.

I am just in absolute awe.... I appear to be the only person on the internet who doesn't like shallow and annoyingly retarded characters. To each his/her own, I suppose, but really now. So much praise for a show that really only has enough material for maybe 6 episodes dragged out into 13, and not one likeable character in a cast of about 2 dozen for whom you can really root for. Amazing how this bothers nobody else.

"Retarded" can be fun if done right, and that's exactly the case with Isaac and Miria. As for shallow? This isn't a character study-oriented series, and it's juggling a cast of about two dozen, so what are you expecting?

Can't agree with the "6 episodes dragged out into 13" comment, either. I have not for a second thought that this series was just filling up time, and with it running multiple plot threads concurrently, and from multiple different angles, it doesn't have time for stretching or filler anyway.

Doubtless there are a few out there who agree with you, but welcome to the realm of "minority opinion."

Heh, I was wondering when you'd show up! You've really made hating this series your personal crusade, haven't you? And while "retarded" may be slightly better than "mongoloid," you really need to stop using offensive words in these posts.

Btw, since we're all here, who is everybody's favorite character that they can really root for? Mine is rather spoiler-ific at this point (doesn't show up until episode 9), but I'd like to hear everyone else's thoughts!

Don't feed the trolls. Just let them sit and mutter to themselves until volume 3 gets reviewed.

This show is probably one of the most enjoyable I've seen in a while. Virtually everything is well done, and its weaker moments are made up for with sheer style.

I'm so glad we've got such a winner of a series on our hands this year. Every time a new volume comes out, I'm just in the best of moods. Very Happy

I gave up and bought the artbox during that Best Buy 50% sale and am filling it with singles. This is my last singles buy. Should be getting v.2 any day now in the mail from TRSI's in stock sale.

As for my favorite character(s), I like Jacuzzi and Nice. I'm glad the OVAs went into more detail about their background.

Vol. 2 has been sitting on top my increasingly large pile of DVDs that need to be watched; I have it, but for some reason I can't bring myself to actually watch it because I'll be disappointed that I don't have any more episodes at the end. xD;
