Buena Vista France seems to be getting with the program on promoting it, while Di$ney seems to be reluctant to acknowledge they got it, for some reason. The only thing they mention for July is that hamster movie called G-Force, which is another example of them ripping off anime, even if it's a hacked dub of Gatchaman.

Ponyo had a great start and I think it will beat Chihiro and Howl by far on theaters. I'm expecting 2 to 3 million entries in France seeing the gigantic buzz on the Internet and in French press, on top of extensive billboard promotion everywhere in Paris right now.
As for the first figures we have on Ponyo, it obviously ranked first on the box office for the first two days after its release, pulverizing Fast and Furious 4 and faring really well after all. But that was expected since Miyazaki is a cult director in France all his movies did more than 500.000 spectators (close to 2 million for Chihiro I think). |
