I loved Hot Gimmick. All of my friends have read it and this big edition will make it easy to pick up.

Man, it's been years since I flipped through my Hot Gimmick volumes. I vaguely recall being unable to stop reading. Things get pretty fuzzy after that (Surgeon General Warning: Do not ingest HG in large quantities. High angst levels may induce blackouts).

I've never been embarrassed to admit that I love Hot Gimmick to anyone, ever. If fact last time I went to a book store with my friends I held this volume up and pronounced my love for it and told them if they didn't buy it, I wouldn't drive them home.
It didn't work though... |

Huh, I though "woah" was just a misspelling. I'm British and always spelled it "whoa". In fact my UK dictionary flags "woah" as incorrect.

Correct. "Whoa" is a (standard) English word, originally used as a halt command for horses. "Woah" is a made up word on either side of the Atlantic - it doesn't appear in either the OED or Cassell's 1600 page dictionary of British slang. It's a spelling error, not a "British-ism". Incidentally, "British-ism" isn't a real word either (and would seem to suggest that Standard English derives from American English, rather than the other way around...). |

It's interesting that this is the second time Hot Gimmick has come up on ANN this week - it was the "Guilty Pleasure" in RTO. So actually this is the second time that it and guilt/embarrassment have been lumped together this week. Not that I disagree with that pairing - it was one of the most addictive series I've ever read, but I REALLY wanted to slap most of them upside the head at the very least. spoiler[Azusa, I wanted to send to prison. Heck, Hatsumi needed some sort of 12-step How Not to be a Welcome Mat program.] I admit to wondering, though, if Aihara wasn't trying to say something about the shoujo romance genre (how many near-rapes occur between the hero and the heroine in most shoujo romances?) and possibly about the expectations girls are raised to have. I'm probably reading waaaay too much into it, though. Occupational hazard.

I actually read this manga last year because it hadn't been out for a long time in French. I could not put it down... Hatsumi is so darn stupid...but she's still very loveable and I wanted to see Ryoji act sweet towards her. My biggest problem with it, as with most manga/anime in general is the ending...bigh let down...a lot of loose ends were not tied up and something really dumb happens to one of my favorite characters.

I don't think an affront to Britain is intended. As you say, "British-ism" isn't a true word, but I think the reviewer was using it as a simple adjective and not a pejorative. All of that is moot, however, because as you point out, it's a misspelling in any Anglophone nation. 
... But anyway, after reading the review, this sounds like something I should point out to my fiancee, if she hasn't already read it. |

This manga is such a heaping pile of misogyny that i couldn’t continue reading. It's just terrible. I thought I might be able to read more to figure out the family story, but I stopped caring cause it pissed me off so much.

Ho ho, I'd highly doubt that one. We are talking about the same woman who did the manga Sensei no Okiniiri! about a high school teacher who gets raped by one of her students, and ends up falling in love with him. Miki Aihara's manga set feminism way, way back. Her manga are sexist, and romanticize abusive relationships with guys who waste no opportunity to demean and belittle the girl they 'love'. They're trashy, pure and simple. But the thing is, those are the exact reasons why her manga are so damned addicting. They're a little slice of escapist fantasy heaven. The bad boy character type is quite popular, and while I think most of us would avoid settling for guys like that in real life, its a lot of fun to read about girls who do fall for them. Reading about girls who are in stable relationships with kind, caring, loving guys just doesn't have the same oomph. That being said, I am totally unashamed to admit that I love Hot Gimmick, and have recommended it to friends in the past, and will continue to do so. |

I wasn't at first because I completely loved the series and still do but I notice the many "issues" other people pointed out that made me have second thoughts. It's just one of those series that are so trashy and stupid you just can't stop reading because it's quite amusing to see everyone mess up xD Same goes with Sensual Phrase. Horrible series with weak door-mat girl with a bad-boy rockstar who's completely controlling but it's just...addicting. |

I don't care how much Hot Gimmick seems to set back feminism. Not every woman out there is a brain who can stand on her own, and I know idiots sadly just like Hatsumi, so I'm not going to hold it against the author for making a realistic, pushover of a girl with absolutely no backbone. What makes Hot Gimmick so much fun is the overblown, overthetop OMFG Drama. I never enjoyed a slice of life shoujo manga as much as this one, nor have any of my non-anime/manga-fan girlfriends who have borrowed it from me (heck, it's hard to get the manga back from them). It's a guilty pleasure for sure, but it's oh so fun to see how Hatsumi will be tortured next, and I HATE soap operas... but that fun.
