I love the "It's 2009 (!)" bit, on a sidenote.

Aside from a few time incongruites, I find this to be an absolute masterpiece anime, and love seeing it here on Buried Treasure, even if it's more relatively well known. That's still a good thing! =p

*the title song is now stuck in my head and will probably be so for at least a half-hour now.*

The one thing I can't deal with about DYRL is that it doesn't have a beginning. It's indisputably the best version of SDF Macross, but if you haven't seen the first dozen episodes of the show or read a detailed summary, don't bother.

Once you get past that, though....wow. Absolutely gorgeous art and animation, and the story is a huge improvement on the TV series in big and small ways.

Also, everyone who enjoys bad dubs should track down that VHS. Best buck-fifty I ever spent.

Well, I pretty much didn't have a choice the first time around and did just that (watched DYRL before Macross or, for the sake of argument, Robotech). Didn't really seem to be a huge issue at the time. The movie's still quite good even without the necessary context to get the most out of it, in my opinion, but it definitely benefits from that extra knowledge.

I'm definitely going to download this. I'm a sucker for nostalgic anime, and the fact that it's a mecha anime like Macross just makes it better. My only exposure to Macross so far has been through Robotech (and a little bit of the ADV release of Macross), and I've liked what I've seen of it. It's a classic for sure. I'm looking forward to watching this movie.

Thanks for this great article, Justin. Smile

When I first saw this, about a year ago, it blew me away just how beautiful it still looks, even by today's standards. I mean, really, it's incredible. A visual masterpiece, at least.

It is, of course, a sped-up version of the TV series, so it misses a few of the nuances of the program, but in a way, it does flow a little better than the clunky-paced show its based on. I just wish Kakazaki wasn't even less of a character. Claudia deserved some more attention, too. At least Max still shined.

It is a classic mecha anime movie. I wish Harmony Gold would have the sense to let AnimEigo to do what they did a couple of years ago with the TV series, and release this, remastered, with all sorts of extra notes. Then I'd remember love.

The original television series, although quite pricey, would still be cheaper to obtain in its entirety than this film alone. If DYRL really is that good then in honesty I'd rather not watch it. It'd become something I'd wish to buy, but wouldn't be able to without spending over £50 for a 114-minute film.

DYRL is a phenomenal movie, but I have to agree, I found it works better as a companion/retelling movie, then a standalone product. You kind of need to know SDF-Macross to some extent to get some of the movies more subtle nuances (including the events preceding the start of the Movie which get completely glossed over)

Also, there are aspects of the movie that didn't quite sit well with me, the big glaring one being spoiler[Misa suddenly getting all domestic while on Earth. That just seemed to fly in the face of the character]

But everything else, the movie is sublime, the animation and art direction, unsurpassable. The fact that follow up Macross shows use DYRL as the cannon source of Space War 1 era mecha designs (over SDF-Macross's) is one of the more lasting cool things about DYRL.

DYRL was released on VHS in subbed form in the UK by a company called kiseki(?) I have a copy and its not too shabby from what I remember. With high quality rips so easily available I haven’t bothered with it in ages, but its nice to have it nevertheless.

WHERE IS MY GODDAMN BLURAY? I would buy it raw and a PS3 to play it. That said, given context and timeframe, I'd say DYRL has some of the best animation I've ever seen in the anime medium. Without knowing it's date of creation, looking at a late DVDrip, I would have placed it at around 88 or 89, certainly not 84. It destroys contemporaries such as Nasuciaa and A-ko in that respect, and it still dwarfs even more productions to this date. Area 88 gave me the same feelings as well, a very high budget OVA from 85 that has amazing animation for the aerial scenes.

I highly suggest downloading this or importing where you can, it's never gonna get a release here. If I did, I'd be shocked. Also, don't let Sevakis tell you get the Clash of the Bionoids if you want to own it, that copy is best left forgotten to time. I was wondering when you'd get to this though, or if it didn't need to be covered. I for one have two DVDrips, one from BG/Bakawolf for a reduced grain/cleaned up, and one from Live-eviL for grain retention. They're both worth keeping. My friend also got an older subtitled fansub from with like 10 minutes of notes before the movies start. That's worth keeping just for the nostalgia, and to remind us how much more technology has gotten better.

What's really great about DYRL to me is that it's a retelling of the series that actually changes things up and isn't afraid to mess with the canon and character designs. I've seen a lot of compilation/retelling movies that don't really do all that much different from the series, and they use the same exact cels from the show at that. This is a rare movie where the entire thing is re-created from scratch. It was definitely an intensive work made from a labor of love.

I love that too, so the true canon ends up being most of the story from SDF with all of the visual elements from DYRL. That and that DYRL is an actual movie in the Macross time-line from around 2030, albeit somewhat different from our version. Also, everyone should watch Flash Back 2012 if only for the parts during Angel's Paint for the scenes left out of DYRL of Minmei, the concert, and the Megaroad 01.

It should probably also be mentioned that whilst the DYRL redesigns are retained for the rest of the Macross franchise, it's the TV show's plot that is carried forwards as what actually happened. And if that doesn't make your head spin, DYRL is explicitly referred to as an in-universe movie of the events that happened in Space War 1 (think Pearl Harbour).

In the queue behind all the Ghibli BDs. And the Rebuild BD(s). And every other beautiful looking pre-digipaint film-stock-mastered movie, OVA, and TV show. At least Cagliostro is a start.

Yeah I have that copy. Also Kiseki in Australia (BPS Video Services) released it too. There's also a Japanese laserdisc with the Toho dub and Japanese subtitles released circa 1987.

I don't know people keep repeating that there's Australian actors in the dub. I can't hear a single Australian accent in the film. There's no acting credits in the dub version anyway to check. The actors sound identical those who performed the dubs for the 1980's and and some of the 1990's Godzilla films, in particular Godzilla vs. Biollante and Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah.

I have a VHS of Clash of the Bionoids, and I'd say even that's worth tracking down. If you've seen Macross TV, the edits won't be so confusing, and it really is a gorgeous film. I wish I'd nabbed an unedited tape at some point though.... something to keep an eye out for.

The dub was produced in Hong Kong. Most English-fluent Hongkongers grew up speaking Chinese as well, and with people who'd be working in the early 90s, they were likely taught English by a British instructor, which produces a very hard-to-place accent.

That they're BluRaying CCS and YYH makes me a little miffed. They'll probably do even more undeserving series before they get to Macross. You'd think a lot of Ghibli titles wouldn't be that pertinent right now, since otaku are more likely to buy other titles, despite the popularity of some like Nausicaa or Laputa.

I actually hear that accent quite often in a lot of anime. You can tell it's a Japanese doing a rather good British accent, but it's unmistakably not British. It's very noticeable in stuff like Sky Crawlers during the newscasts. Although in the original DYRL there's quite a lot of English announcements, and they sound more western, possibly done by tourists? Also, the Zentrans definitely aren't voiced by Japanese either, like when they first crash into the Macross "Zentran to Meltran?" is the line that always gets me, it's hilarious.

Anime cry Talk about an article that pulls at the heart strings. I was singing "Do You Remember Love?" in the shower last night, no joke. Oboete imasu ka...

I think I'd agree with this. I go back and forth on whether DYRL or Macross Plus is the crowning achievement of the Macross franchise (or which is better: the last 10 minutes of Minmay singing "Do You Remember Love?" or the Sharon Apple concert... I can never decide!), but as much as I love DYRL, I'm grateful I saw the TV series beforehand. I get the feeling the film wouldn't mean nearly as much to me without the background story and my intense fondness for all the characters. I always liked side characters like Max, Milia, and Roy Focker better than Hikaru, Minmay and Misa, and seeing their bit parts in the movie brought out rushes of excitement I don't think I'd have felt otherwise.

I do appreciate that the DYRL version of Minmay is not a colossal shrew, though.
