From what I can tell, being overworked seems to go hand-in-hand with being a mangaka (though I think some definitely bring it on themselves, *cough*Watase Yuu*cough*).

I hope she has a quick and full recovery!

This sucks. Ai Yazawa is one of my favourites, and it's sad to hear that she's not doing too well.
Please get well soon, Ms. Yazawa.

Man, hope it's not too serious and that she's able to continue with and finish NANA when she gets better!

That sounds serious. I hope she takes care of herself and doesn't let them push her too much, and takes the time to truly recover. NANA fans are loyal. We'll wait as long as it takes.

I don't really care about Nana- not at all, actually- but it's always interesting to me that manga-kahs seem to be some of the only people in the world who consistently fall ill for months at a time rather than the few days to a week that the rest of society suffers. Not that I don't think they need a break from time to time, nor do I mean to say that her particular illness, whatever it may be, can't be that serious, but whenever a popular story goes on hiatus, it's always for a projected several month long illness that leaves the artist completely incapable of functioning in anyway while stricken.

It's just interesting. I mean, if you're overworked and need a break, then by all means you deserve to take one. But a 6+ month long illness every other year or so makes it sound like writing a serial comic may very well put you on your deathbed.

Please take care and get well soon, Yazawa-sensei! I'm still hoping Nana and Nana can find happiness.

Mangaka work very hard. They not only write and draw the comic on a tight schedule, but they must draw color pages and covers and extras that folks outside of Japan rarely see. It's not the kind of thing you can do six or seven days a week if you're not feeling well. I often think we do not truly appreciate the hard work these people do!

Usually very big name manga ka have assistants to take off some work load and pressure. I guess it still got to her. Besides, this is her second hiatus due to illness. What does she have? Cancer? Asthma?

While I don't read NANA, I hope she gets better soon!

I do like her art style, though... Perhaps I could read it...

Yeah, from what I've read this is true but it seems to vary for mangaka how much they have the assistants actually do. Some do all the drawing themselves and leave screentones to assistants which is still a lot of work. The majority of the creative work would still fall to her, at any rate.

Yazawa-sensei does not hire any assistants, yet she's been drawing 40+ pages a month for the past...7 years at least? Considering that most shojo mangakas drawing 32+ pages a month hire several assistants, it's a lot of work for one person to do.
