Because his being the Creative Director for part of the Halo anime is not selling out, where being an Episode Director is? Right then, enjoy your logic fail.

Personally, I think he's involved just because he wants to be involved(or, perhaps more specifically, Microsoft really hoped he'd be available/willing, and he decided he was), and not because of ZOMGMONEYFAME. He's got fame and acclaim, and if he really cared about the cash, you'd be seeing him heavily exploiting the current trends(hell, he'd probably only need to attach his name to projects at this point).

Pfft. Who needs logic when you can rant angrily on the internet.

I just wanted to reach out to the very upset Gatotsu and assure him that Mr. Oshii's other movies will still continue to exist long after his involvement with our project ends. Oshii does whatever he wants, and we certainly didn't drive trucks of money to his house, or threaten him, or ask him to sell out. He likes animation, he likes sci-fi and we had the benefit of his artistic vision.

It's not an exaggeration to say that Ghost in the Shell (and other anime) has been one of the many influences on Halo and in some ways, this thing is an homage to the work of Mamouro Oshii and the other incredible artists and directors involved in the production.

Accusing him of selling out, simply because he's working on something you're not familiar with, seems like a very unfair thing to do to an artists you've loved unreservedly otherwise. Give the project a chance - if you like it, wonderful - some of that enjoyment will be because of Mr. Oshii's involvement and if you hate it, well, then it wasn't for you.

But for pete's sake, don't reject the man's body of work because you don't like Halo.

Hint: You might even like Halo better than you think you do.

Frank O'Connor,

Microsoft Moneyhat Evil Sellout Anime Destruction Force.

Since there seems to be some confusion, I should clarify that this particular post was intended to be somewhat tongue-in-cheek, not a boldfaced declaration of my feelings on the matter.

Well, I'd still be interested to know what you think of the pieces after they air.

Oh, I'm sure they'll be decent. I doubt Mamoru Oshii could make a bad animated movie if he tried (a completely incomprehensible movie, perhaps, but likely not a bad one). I was pretty shocked when I first heard about this whole thing, but I've just kinda accepted it by now. I'm still a bit bitter about the whole deal and I don't plan on going out of my way to see it, but whatever. Could I name at least a dozen other IPs, even strictly within the video game world, that I think are more deserving of Oshii's talent? Absolutely. But this is what he's working on for now, and as long as he keeps doing the kind of movies I love him for, I'm pretty much just meh. Not like there's anything much I can do about it, anyway.
