I see what you mean, but given the quality of the OVAs I wouldn't have had it any other way. I think the shift in pacing between the finale and the coda is rather fitting given the way the rest of the story was structured, actually. Definitely, this is one of the year's best series (if not the best). Rarely have I been so captivated from start to finish. Everything is done right, as the review clearly emphasizes. |

Glad to see the OVAs are being released in North America as part of the series and not sold seperately. Two reasons for this: A) It would be very expensive and B) There would be less content in each of the volumes of the main series. Hopefully, the light novels will be brought over someday (though I doubt they will be) and this series is definately at the top of my Must Buy list.

Well, they could have divided it up as 5-4-4-3, giving the OVAs a disc of their own; but then you'd have the fear of fans, with the TV broadcast over, skipping the OVA episodes which are, well, awesome. I was nervous to watch them the first time around for fear they couldn't live up to the original run, but man, did I love them! And now I have to decide whether to get the whole thing or to wait for a box set. Probably the latter, given my extreme lack of money. But this is such a must-have for me, it's been hands-down my favorite series in the last few years. It's one of a handful of series that, whenever I think about it, I want to watch it again. And to whatever company people that watch these forums, you know what would really make me the happiest fan in the world? Getting the light novels translated. I think all Baccano! fans want them badly. Because there is no end to the story... |

I very much agree with this. I liked the OVAs for what they were, but I think I just watched them too soon after the ending of the series - I wish I had given myself more time to ruminate on the ending, and then watched the OVAs while thinking of them more as side stories than a continuation. Which is why I actually rather wish they hadn't put the last episode on a disc with the OVAs, but, eh, it's not that big a deal. Just slightly awkward, but not that big a deal - still want to buy them all regardless, heh. Actually, I did really like the very end of the last OVA, that kind of saves it for me - I even kind of wish that had been the ending of episode 13, to be honest. But having it at the very end helps to tie the OVAs in more, I guess. Just have to wait for a box set now - come on, Funi, fork it over! |

I actually saw the entire series over the past few days. It's good, original, but I don't think it deserves such praise. The pacing is original, I'll give it that, but the story telling is broken up in too many pieces. It's hard to keep track of everything. Plus, there are a lot of characters for a series that is just 13 episodes long, so making sense of it all can be difficult. Instead of releasing it in separate volumes, I would have released this series in a thinpack or a boxset right away because this series is easier to comprehend if you watch it in one entire sitting.
I saw it and there are things that I still don't know if I understood them or not. But, that means it has a good rewatch value, so it's good

Well, I (clearly) watched this via fansubs and so saw it one episode a week, then had a big span of time between the end of the TV until the OVAs. That was probably a better way to watch it than in four episode chunks at two-month intervals, but I did still have some confusion over it. When it got licensed, I did my do-I-really-want-to-buy-this? re-watch, and in one clump over a few days, it made perfect sense to me (and the answer was "yes"). I hope you have the same experience.

WOOT! Baccano! FTW! I totaly can't wait for more episodes on On Demand! I might consider buying it if I can afford it. I have to save my money to by Nerima Daikon Brothers.

If you're talking about the violence... there's a lot of it, but there's certainly worse series out there. It made me cringe at times, but I was never actually nauseated, like with Gantz or Shigurui. And even the violence is - I feel weird saying this - part of the entertainment. It's so off-the-wall, unrealistic, and wild that cringing at its extreme moments was sort of fun. |

I couldn't wait for the box any longer. I broke and ordered the singles and artbox the other day. This really looks like series I'll enjoy.
Chris Patton as Graham? Definitely a good choice, he can go crazy sometimes. Although I'll probably be rewatching those scenes every time in Japanese too. I remember the instant I first heard that ranting lunatic I was like, "Holy SH-...! It's Sakata Gintoki!!" (from Gintama) |

I have to disagree with those saying the series is hard to follow. I think more stories should try to deviate from the stereotypical way of telling their tale. (This would include linear plots and also ones that fragment it slightly with a flash-back, the two most commonly used methods for storytelling.)
The size of the cast and the overall short length of the series, along with seeing small pieces of the plot unveil and come together helped me feel like I was actually witnessing an event instead of just watching another show. Beyond that though, I feel they should have done a seperate disc for the OVA episodes, too though they might not have sold to the lazy fans. Besides myself, most of the people I know who watched this needed a bit of time to absorb the show in an entirety to really enjoy it, and rushing into the follow-up doesn't help for that inner resolution one would need for this series. |

ths is indeed a really good series and I hope it sells better than in Japan, where it was mostly overlooked (they make some great series but the common buyer's taste is as crappy as in any country)
