Oh, I think Shakespeare purists will have turned the TV off after the first 5 minutes of the first episode. Not a knock against the show, though. |

Thus far, I have never been really disappointed with any of Gonzo's retellings or adaptions.
In many ways, I respect the effort involved to make adaptions in general. Because you have to be careful. No matter how many elements you add in (magic tricks, mecha, space travel, etc.), it needs to have the overall feel of the original. In that manner of thinking, I enjoy animes that do this sort of thing. I was thoroughly pleased with the first half of Romeo x Juliet, and I can't wait to see the other half... I'm a dub fan... |

The review was so glowing but the grades were low. Heh.
Mines, Hermione, and Escalus... yes, I'd say the same thing. First half is good enough to make this my favorite series, but second half is bad enough to make me admit that "it's not that good." I do like that they die for noble reasons rather than just "I LURVE HER I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT HER  " though.
I never watch dubs, I really believe in watching foreign films in their original language, but if it's really that great (and iambic pentameter really? O_O), I think I really WILL watch the dub. |

That's a philosophy that always makes sense to me, and is just one good discussion for defending fiction against people who say it's more a waste of time compared to non-fiction. I thought the entirety of this series was beautiful when I watched it subbed on Funimation online. I just received the Juliet collection from Right Stuf, so I hope to getting around to watching the dub version in its entirety soon. |

Okay, before I stick this on my Netflix list, when you talk about the ending being different, I have a small spoiler to be of you. Just a one word answer will suffice: do Romeo and Juliet die in the end?
Because if it tacks on a happy ending where they both live together... I don't think I'm going to bother. To me that would be a total betrayal of the story. I don't care about any of the other changes, some of them even sound awesome, but Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy. It can be a bittersweet ending, but it can't be them walking off into the sunset together, sorry.

That wasn't clear from the review? Yes, neither one survives, although you'll think almost until the last second that they are going to avoid their original fate. |

No, it really wasn't. You kept talking about "doom" and "heroic sacrifice" while saying it was different from the original, which could easily be construed as "only one of them dies" or "something awful happens, but they don't die." Glad to hear it keeps that part of the story intact. This is definitely on my viewing list now.

How is a B+ a low grade? Anyway, R+J didn't really appeal to me. I saw the first couple of episodes but never really got attached to much of anything. Still, maybe sales for this will lead to more wild Shakespeare adaptations. Would love to see one for Tempest or even A Midsummer Night's Dream. |

A Midsummer Night's Dream is probably my favorite Shakespearean work, but I can't see it ever getting an anime series adaptation. There's just not enough story involved to work with. Romeo and Juliet was a prime target because its condensed time frame makes it easy to expand upon. Hamlet, OTOH, could definitely work. A sci-fi interpretation of that one might have potential. |

This anime was really great. But I still think that Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo was a better adaptation when it comes down to classic drama.

Wouldn't expect it to be. Gankutsuou is one of the greatest anime series ever created, it would be rather difficult to top. Anyway, I shall watch this one. May take a while, but the positive reviews have sold me on it! |

Generally speaking, Bs and B+s aren't low grades. In light of the fact that the series is being compared to one of the great literary works, Bs and B+s are pretty freakin' awesome, I'd say. Though I agree, the review was glowing. I think it's even turned me around on the series, which I hadn't been planning on buying. Will seriously consider it next month...
I really can't understand people who call fiction a waste of time, especially compared to non-fiction. It just doesn't jive with me. |
