just like GaoGaiGar, the first half of Hitman Reborn really sucks. i'd recommend watching 20-25, and then skipping straight to the Varia arc. i personally liked how Tsuna's powers evolve as the show goes on. at the beginning he started off with the crappy "Dying Will" power... now he's practically Goku.

Too bad that's the only good arc in the series, now it's a giant clusterf**k of ideas that doesn't mend well together at all and it's only selling point is it's bishounen character designs and rampant yaoi fangirls

We were trying to introduce anime to a friend last weekend. We were like, oh show him what got us hooked when we were younger, aka the stuff on adult swim. Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, FLCL, etc... He hated them all. He did like one show.

Yeah, I guess Zac and Justin haven't been keeping up with the show's dub

Aww, I had a feeling my question to Liam might be too specific for them to use... I guess it's better that they didn't ask, they might've teased me otherwise.

What would be a good gateway drug into anime? I dunno, even though it's not actually anime, I might suggest Avatar: the Last Airbender, since it shares a lot of anime sensibilities and is really quite good just in and of itself.

As for recent stuff, I think Sgt Frog would be a good gateway drug for people who are already fans of animated comedies - and Tower of Druaga would be good for fantasy/D&D fans. You might have some luck with Gurren Lagann. Or Witchblade, for fans of western comic books...

So, yeah.

Nothing immediately came to mind. I had to look over my collection just to come up with those.

The only anomaly regarding the Reborn fandom is that it is hugely cosplayed in both the US and Japan. In fact it's been stated to be the #1 cosplayed show in Japan and there's a huge number of Reborn cosplayers at US cons.

I've never figured out why that is, other than it has easily-cosplayed characters who do look pretty cool. Maybe it resonates with the type of person to do cosplay or something.

So you see hints of a large following at cons but then the buzz surrounding it online is very small. I find it intriguing anyway.

It's not entirely hard to cosplay as any of the characters from Reborn, since of them are derived from mafia lore, also characters like Xaxnus, Murako, and Chrome seemed to have developed a following that's bigger than the series itself. And of the characters have circulated a plethora of doujinishis of the yaoi variety moreso than any other JUMP title. It's really hard to see what's the appeal in this franchise since it's as bland as they come

Some of my fellows in yaoi fandom just love Reborn, but it was simply too long for me. A show has to really knock my socks off for me to make it past 39 episodes...

Plus, I think I'm just allergic to Shonen Jump properties in general. (Majin Neuro being the only exception to this rule. Now there's a show I'd like to see licensed.)

I'll be relieved when FMA: Brotherhood and Soul Eater get on Adult Swim, finally a new gateway drug for newbies.

I don't think you've gotta be offended by RIN. I for one was just shocked you didn't hate it. Serious or not I thought it was just painfully awful.

Circumstantial nothing. This is exactly the problem. No new fans. No unique, new gateway anime. You know though, I think a big part of the problem is a lack of new blood on the Japanese side. The old guard is disappearing. As you guys said, Shinaki is pretty far from mainstream. I hope Hosoda can attract some new fans because other than him there aren't many people of note in recent years.

I mean no disrespect to VAs but I have to think there would be very little 'do you know how I am' attitude because the answer is going to be 'no' as far as 99% of the population goes.

If you actually took the plot seriously than yes it was awful and didn't make much sense in the end as well

They're plenty of new directors the problem is none of them are terribly good and all the best ones we got in the 80's and 90's aren't actively involved in the industry anymore

I've been introducing a few of my friends to anime lately, and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time has been very successful. I also think that if/when Summer Wars is released in the U.S., it will be a great gateway film.

Surprisingly, even more successful than Mamoru Hosoda movies has been Big Windup! All of my friends love it.
