At very least, the man directing this film has experience in making films laden with visual effects—a background requisite for working on a title such as this.

While I might be looking into things that aren't there, I also feel as if these filmmakers are patronizing the anime fans and the anime creators by making these live action films. As if it goes "Well, that was good, for a cartoon, let's see how it goes in live action."

I hope he instead adapts the book, and not just the film. But regardless, his films do look great, hope the screenwriters can do a decent job. But really, this story does lend itself better to live action than most of the other titles mentioned.

Zin: I'd trust him more if he didn't just come off Poseidon.

But anyway, there already is a live action Paprika, and it's called Inception! Oh, and I hope Kon and Tsutsui got paid for this.

How much more so than comparing Kon's film to the book with "Well, that was good, for a novel..."? I look forward to seeing Petersen's interpretation in a different medium.

Despite what CGI is capable of these days I HIGHLY doubt that a live action version can visually match what was done in the original movie.

Not only because of technology but I am sure they will change alot of stuff and make it not nearly what the original was. They have it easy in one regard and that is that the characters themselves would not be to hard to recreate in live action. But the more intense visual pieces such as the Parade or the Dream towards the end of the movie would be really hard if not impossible to pull off in CGI to the degree it would need to be to look good.

Well, Troy isn't exactly the most reassuring of track records, what what really worries me is this:

Yes, the movie that decided that Viewers Are Idiots, and that blatantly violating the laws of thermodynamics was preferable to explaining that the machines weren't automatically evil (i.e. keep humanity in a virtual world of their own devising rather than slaughter them wholesale).

I somehow doubt the live-action adaptation will keep some form of the giant naked Atsuko Chiba from near the end of the film. Westerners just don't like nudity. I am optimistic about this though I suppose, as long as it's not made into some hardcore Matrix rip-off.

In terms of adaptability though, I'd say Satoshi Kon's "Tokyo Godfathers" is much more suited to the treatment of live-action. No need for any CGI for it at all. But yeah, I'm looking forward to a live-action Paprika, much more than that live-action Bleach film being made.

But I'm "one to talk": I usually struggle to consider anything photographic unless unless it's very unusually processed to be a finished work; if I like a movement or face or something I'll think, "That would be so fun to draw!" So I can understand there being someone who feels the opposite. What I don't like is that there seem to be rather lot more of the latter kind of person. Confused

Well, typically, the anime creators are the ones who have to approve of those movies, so...

Considering how much the movie contained elements from various cinematic genres, I could easily see a live-action Paprika working. Some of the garish imagery would have to be toned down, but otherwise, I could see the complextion of the film turning out well. Peterson's "simplification" comment sounds little concerning, but given how rather "simple" it is, I don't think it will warrant any great watering down. I could say that for nearly all of Kon's films, and not in a necessarily positive way, but that's another argument for another day (I wouldn't mind a live-action Perfect Blue, however, which just begs for it to star a pop princess looking for a breakout role in a big way).

On a separate note, I'd actually like to see him at least keep the ethnicity of Atsuko and the romance the same, just for the sake of doing something different (in terms of Hollywood's habits). Doubt it for the former, but it would still be nice to see.
