Unless they can prove the kid was going to inflict harm there isn't any crime. This is retarded.
On the other hand, I wish they handled stalkers like this.

Honestly, I don't blame these school for freaking out. Nine out of ten times, a school shooting can be prevented if they pay attention and act early. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
I'm not say that this kid was going to hurt anyone, but he should have known better. Imagine you were a teacher or parent that discovered something labeled Death Note. If you aren't familiar with the series, the interpretation would jump to a hit list, no?

Quoted for truth. The kid was playing around with something he should not have been playing around with. Got caught. Now he's paying the price. /end story. Personally, I'm really getting sick of these stories. I remember there was one where a friggin' high-school senior was caught with his own Death Note. A high school senior! People like that need be banned from the gene pool. |

Oh no, he wrote their names and time of death...big whoop. What are they going to do next, expel people who shout "I'll kill you!"? Isn't this technically though crime?

Pretty much. And even if you'd seen the series and were familiar with the manga I think you'd be more than a little concerned about the fact that someone was trying to make one. Obviously, if someone was just being funny and put the title on one of their notebooks it's a different story (maybe a bit dark, but nobody is going to do much more than ask you why you labeled your trig notebook as "Death Note"), but so far I think that the reaction was probably the appropriate one. Regardless of time or place, kids will act stupid (and so will many adults), but so long as this isn't a case of "zero tolerance" equating to zero intelligence, I think that you need to let discretion be the better part of valor here. |

Probably not expel, but suspend. In a school environment, and a work environment, these can be considered "terroristic threats". In fact, I know a couple people who have been terminated from jobs for saying those exact words. I also had a friend in high school who was suspended for a week for saying it to a teacher. Imagine what would have happened if the school had ignored this and the kid actually did go on to kill someone? Not only would someone be dead, but the school could be held liable for his actions. You might think it's overreacting, but they really had no other course of action in the matter. EDIT: Fixed a typo. I meant suspended. Actually, at schools I went to, verbal threats were enough to warrant suspension if the threat was severe (IE, I'll kill you!) |

God these people are stupid. They deserve their suspensions/expulsions (it was implied that this 14 year-old was expelled) completely.
