And now from the Dept. of Redundancy Department:

Japan comic industry threatens legal action against illegal U.S. sites

‘‘Illegal websites have mushroomed rapidly in the past one or two years,’’ an official at the association said. ‘‘We cannot sit idly by any longer now that we expect to see new gadgets like electronic readers become more widespread.’’

Maybe a sign of things to come............ Blame iPad (4 million and counting). Laughing
(BTW, Youtube and iPad don't mix.)

I'm confused. The kid posted stuff before it was published. The police are saying he got it from non-Japanese web sites. Assuming I buy that (which I'm not sure I do), how the heck did they get it? Am I being dense, or is someone seriously in denial here?

Yeah, I don't quite understand that too. Unless the story means that he's posting them before the stuff is released overseas.

Yea, that had me puzzled too.
Apparently information density on the internet is now causing small tears in the space-time fabric Razz

My guess would be it's something like:
Someone picks up the early sale copy, either in the backroom or actually buys it. The scans gets posted to a certain site that's now dead that ended in .fr. The kid then downloaded off that site and put them on youtube.

Perhaps the article meant that he got the idea to post on Youtube from overseas sites as indicated from the following sentence:
Quote:
The unnamed third-year middle-school student from Nagoya reportedly saw online video sites with uploaded manga images and realized that he could do the same thing himself.

Rather than that he had

obtained the manga images from overseas sites.

It's both. He was inspired by people who were already doing this before him, and he obtained the manga images from overseas sites before the official release dates.

This story is essentially Update 7 of this story from about 2 weeks ago, which says

Quote:
The suspect reportedly admitted to photographing the manga, page by page, and uploading the images as videos without authorization.

My confusion only grows.

1. It's super easy to get magazines before their release date. I have no idea why people are making such a big fuss over this.

2. He could have gotten raws from one site, and also photographed a few series himself. It doesn't have to be one or the other.

Stupid kid. He should have shaved his legs, donned a skirt, and danced using the copyright material. He would have been treated like an idol.

Now, he's got to worry about dropping the soap.

You seriously don't believe that the 14 yo is going to jail, right?

Probably not jail, but I do believe some form of incarceration is in the lad's future.

Ditto here. How he got it before release should be the biggest issue, not that he posted it on youtube, which I know probably hundreds fo people do.

IIRC you don`t go to jail for copyright infringement unless there's some kind of profit involved. I've never heard of people going to jail for giving away stuff for free. He'll probably be fined a hefty sum that his parents will have to pay though.

Maybe I'm going conspirative, but I'm starting to think that this kind of news are hoax.
