This is just... I mean... I don't really know what to say... I... Just...
WOW. Just wow. It sounds like brain washing, they're even distributing it at schools, seriously. What's next? An anime?

BREAKING NEWS: Disaffected twentysomethings distrust information disseminated by the government. More at eleven.

Though in all seriousness, this is a shock to me; I didn't realize there was actually popular division about the Cheonan. It's readily apparent that the North did torpedo it, from everything that I've read about the ensuing investigation.

You'd think Seoul was in danger of becoming a vassal to Pyongyang if there's that much mistrust; then again, I suppose being that close to the debacle could alter one's perspective.

That's in no way like brainwashing (especially since NKs ARE brainwashed), and it isn't even mean, it's the truth. If people don't want to believe it that's their own problem. I always think it's so funny when there's propaganda about North Korea, like the anime about Megumi. I mean it's not that difficult to say or show people that North Korea is a villain, NK pretty much takes care of that.

Japan staged a train explosion as provocation to invade China.

Who's to say Korea didn't stage the boat sinking to provoke public reaction in favor of a conflict with North Korea?

Where's the incentive? Confuse people? Really?

The South Korean government staged the sinking of a South Korean ship. This did not have the profound, nationalistic effect on its people that they hoped it would, and as a result they have to use all the propaganda pamphlets that they made and scheduled to have released at the time of the sinking but couldn't because of the large amount of skepticism at the time.

When it comes to the North Korean and South Korean leadership, birds of a feather flock together.

Is it really appropriate to be using the word alleged in this article. Didn't the North all but admit that they did it?

Uh...

If you are trying to be sarcastic then I think you missed the mark. If you are being serious then I think you either need to do more research or get help.

Who's to say the moon landing wasn't staged? Who's to say 9/11 wasn't an inside job?

Look, this is the same line of reasoning used to justify nearly every crazy conspiracy ever and it's no more valid here than it is in those cases. You can always come up with some crazy hypothetical alternate explanation. Here's the problem though: These explanations are always vastly more far fetched that the vastly more simple, plausible, standard explanation. That being the case, it is simply NOT rational or reasonable to believe the prior instead, let alone to state as if it's somehow fact.

North Korea is totally batshit crazy. Their whole history under this regime indicates this. They've shown no hesitation toward doing crazy, provocative things in the past. We DO NOT need to reach for an explanation here.

Okay, it's time for North Asian Geopolitics 101.

South Korea (read: the United States) has no incentive to ignite large contingency warfare with North Korea. It's smack dab in the middle of a nuclear powder keg, artillery strikes from the North could decimate Seoul in a matter of hours, and an open war could open the floodgates for millions of refugees to cross the demilitarized zone into South Korea, an economic and political quagmire that might last generations. More likely though the majority would flee west into China due to the minefields lining the DMZ, and the Chinese would in turn effectively annex Pyongyang. The new neighborhood would be charged with even more political tension than it is now as the United States, Japan and the South struggled to contain a militarized China, and no matter what direction the war went in, economic investment would drain out of South Korea amidst concerns over long-term stability on the peninsula.

It... wouldn't be pretty.

To keep the discussion anime-related: this scenario would make an excellent series; too bad no studio would touch it with a ten-foot pole. Razz

Damn. This is crazy. But very informative stuff. I wish there was a way to get a copy. This is almost as bad as the whole 'Rape of Nanking' manga that was mentioned some time back. Never realized that NK and SK were so troublesome.

Ain't that the truth. It seems to be the case pretty much everywhere these days. The only nation I can think of where the people do appear to unequivocally trust their government is actually North Korea. Of course, no one really knows how much of that is due to a generation of brainwashing and how much is due to fear; in the North, expressing distrust of the regime can be detrimental to good health and long life.

Given the level of tension on the peninsula, it's not surprising that the South's government would feel a need to press it's position with skeptical young people. What suprises me is that these young people are skeptical in the first place. It's been made pretty clear that the Cheonyn was sunk by a torpedo from the North, nor is it the first time that the North and South have engaged each other since the truce.

The comic suggests that North Korea's goal in sinking the boat was to divide the nation.

One initially reacted to this sentence as if it was somewhat trivial, until the realisation dawned upon me that the term "nation" referred only to the South.

The nice little thing about the word alleged is that it gets used until whatever charge is being levelled is actually proven and passed as a conviction in a court. That's why you will sometimes see articles about criminals who have already admitted their crimes, being referred to as an "alleged thief/murderer/rapist/etc." It's that whole "innocent until proven guilty" thing.

I'm not too surprised about South Korean government using cartoon medium for propaganda. Actually, we Americans did the same thing during WW2. Besides, it's not a rare thing to see governments and ideological/religious groups using popular media to promote their agendas and causes.
