Wow. TokyoPop's doing a reality show? Geez. Just when I thought they couldn't hit new lows... Wasn't joyfully molesting Priest into a horrible film and spinoff comic bad enough? Why can't they just publish manga and try getting that right instead of all these half assed media spinoffs? Who the hell do they think this awful 'otaku' reality show will appeal to? Don't most anime nerds snobbishly think they're above such American reality TV shows anyway? It's crap like this that makes me hate the buzzword 'otaku' and makes me think its more derogatory original meanings are on the money.

I think they're trying to get a piece of another kind of pie. Today's manga/animefans seem to be spending a lot on things that aren't manga/anime, but are related to it. Like conventions. And cat ears. And raves? Pocky? Hot Topic clothes? They're trying to appeal to the crowd they think are living according to Tokyopop's 'manga lifestyle rules' or something.

Anyway, I'm going to watch that show. It's going to be hilarious in an awkward, schadenfreude kind of way.

It's probably that, and the fact that they can't secure any good new licenses anymore (let alone hold onto the profitable ones they once had, like the CLAMP stuff). It's a continuation of their earlier initiatives, such as RSOM: selling manga-ish content without actually dealing with the Japanese. None of them felt as desparate as this one, though.

By the way, I nominate the GIRUGAMESH! guy.

No, you make a drinking game outta it.

One shot for every stereotype you can spot. 5 if TOKYOPOP tries to push their products onto the screen somehow in a very bad product placement type of deal.

Instead of licensing new series to help our company stay afloat, we'll just burn a couple million dollars on crappy live action movies, a reality show, and Princess Ai stickers and notebooks.

How is Tokyopop still alive?

Good question. However their not allowed to die until all of Future Diary and Deadman Wonderland is released in english. After that, they can burn for all I really care.
