[Sorry, I couldn't be bothered to make any more constructive comment than complaining about the lack of a dub for the 10,000th time and how it's not worth buying because of this, so I just posted something that was sure to get edited/deleted by a Mod. - Key]

Its dramatic side can pack some power, too, delivering some scenes which can be emotional, others which are uncomfortable, and other still which can take the viewer aback with their unexpected intensity.

And that is what impressed me most about Toradora. Love this show! Anime catgrin

Actually, the reason I liked the first half was because it didn't focus on drama, well, spoiler[other than Taiga's daddy issues]. However, even that part wasn't hamhanded like the second half was... but I'll save that for if/when volume 2 of Toradora is reviewed.

Anyway, I really enjoyed the first half or Toradora! As you said, the writing was fantastic and the comedy really worked out well.

Having finished the show about 4-5 days ago, I felt that it is, nothing special on a grand scale.
However, if we're talking straight romantic comedies. Nothing more, nothing less, then yeah. Toradora deserves some praise for that.

My only discrepancies are that spoiler[Minorin could've been used a LOT better. Her insights are nice, but her facades mixed with her lack of stepping up to speak her mind is so typical of heroine's best friends.
Yui did a great job at performing her character, but Minorin just bugged me in the early eps.
Ami, whilst having more direct involvement, doesn't really go far from being just a mature listener. She probably advises Ryuji the most in what he should do. Eri did a great job in performing her character IMO.]

Of course, Kitamura is, by and large, just the weakest character in depth. A total nice guy blessed with appeal and smarts. Boring.

Taiga.... impressed me with everything she did. Her character; nothing new, but she spoke up more, said what she wanted to, and was still interesting as a tsundere.

The whole show is/was a great exp. It's not entrepreneurial, but it made the right choices at the right time(for the most part)spoiler[Ending sucked].

Better to have a subtitle-only legal release than an illegal version, plus considering that this is their first dive into the anime business there's no way in hell they could really dub the show. Use some common sense please.

And honestly, haven't seen the series, but NIS did a pretty good job with releasing Toradora!, from addressing the ghosting issues and getting the replacements out to how they originally packaged the series with the nice box and artbook. So I was actually quite pleased with getting this for my brother for his birthday when it came out back in July. He's already saving up to get the second set. Anime hyper

I used to agree with Theron on everything. Now it seems like our tastes have little in common.

I always knew that this was going to be a very positive review, so I wasn't surprised. Yet I'm still annoyed about the grade.

Ah, but whatever. The silver lining I can take from this is that I won't be going out and paying money for it. And who says fansubs don't have a useful place in fandom?

Seriously, get over it.

and they do so with the subtitles turned off.

I've played the first DVD on 3 different players and can confirm that the subtitles have appeared on all three. This is probably a problem with your dvd player and not the DVDs.

The current retail copies still have all the same ghosting issues as the first discs. NIS America has stated that none of those copies have the new replacement discs (that still have not reached those of us waiting for them). That would be why the picture is not sharp. The built in ghosting definitely softens the picture.

Also, I noticed the reviewer said that the DVDs start with the subtitles off. That depends on your DVD player settings.

The packaging is nice, but I have to agree that it's highly awkward. It goes double in depth instead of width, which allows for more room for images, but it just doesn't work as well on the shelf.

I do have to wonder when they're going to get around to sending out the replacement discs though. I have enough other stuff to watch that I don't intend to actually watch it until I get the replacement discs (especially since I saw part of the series fansubbed already).

The lack dub doesn't bother me all that much (though a dub would certainly be nice). What I'd really like is Blu-ray release, but since I don't think that it's had a Blu-ray release in Japan yet, and there's no way that NIS is going to do Blu-ray releases when they're just starting out given the extra cost, that's pretty much a pipe dream for now.

Regardless, it's great that NIS has been able to bring such a great title to the US. Hopefully they do well enough that at some point they'll be able to do dubs and do releases on Blu-ray.

Your birth = epic failure. Once again, I ask the admins - why is this anti-sub-only soapboxer allowed to post here?

Wait, was it you who reported their post? Geez man, that's uncalled for.

And yes, I am aware of Mario1234567's recent history.

Just saying.

I don't know what you mean by "reported their post" - I make all my comments onboard; I don't send private PMs to admins. What is so uncalled for about commenting on somebody's soapboxing tendencies considering soapboxing is not allowed? Remember how you whined (via PM) to an admin after I swatted your snout in a thread and got said thread locked? Good times.

I also have no idea what you mean by Mario's "recent" history. There is nothing "recent" about his anti-sub-only soapboxing. He was banned for it in the past, allowed to return and has resumed doing it. Ergo, my question about why he is allowed to post here - a question I will pose onboard every single time Mario soapboxes.

Firstly, somebody reported Mario1234567's post, and I thought it might have been you. You can't really blame me for thinking that, given your animosity towards that user.

Secondly, when was this bit about me complaining to an Admin about a thread getting locked? I don't remember myself doing such a thing, and my PM records (which go to December 2009) don't have anything of the sort. So basically, I believe that either this happened ages ago (which doesn't quite fit with our mutual, er, history), or that you are simply making it up. Got any details?

I mean, I checked the first few pages of their posting history by accessing their public profile.

And I don't think you realise how close you are coming to being a soapboxer towards this user's attitude.

Only too happy to refresh your awful memory. It was the Katanagatari discussion thread and here's your post from it which you made on March 12 of this year:

I reported your post, Blood-. I don't know what the Moderator will do; maybe they'll do nothing, or just give you a warning*. But I just wanted to make it clear (not just to you but to everyone) that I won't tolerate that sort of behaviour anymore.

Here is the link to your post:

animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=892745#892745

See, I neither made anything up, nor did it happen "ages ago." May I suggest you start taking some a memory-enhancing supplement like gingko biloba?

*I still chuckle at thought of the slack-jawed, stupefied look that must have crossed your features when - instead of my banning (the result you were hoping for) - your own thread got locked. Laughing By the way, at some point after our exchange in that thread, you were banned yourself for a completely unrelated matter. Do you recall that, or has that slipped your "mind" too? Laughing

But back on topic: I agree with Key's review. I know Toradora! has its detractors, but Key identified all the important things the series did right, imo.

Pertinent information coloured red for those who are a little slower than the rest.

I don't say this very often, but . . . LOL. I didn't think you were ignorant enough to confuse a PM and a post report, but you obviously have. You also don't seem to have realised that Mods are not Admin. Of course I'm going to overlook something when you give me false parameters.

Now are you going to keep on spouting factually incorrect information, or are you actually going to shut your trap so this thread can get back on topic? I'm happy either way.

Just saying.
