Lucky Californians. The Patlabor films are great I wish I could see them theatrically. I also wouldn't mind seeing Kamui either, the trailer looks good.

I'd love to see it on the big screen, it would have been remastered if it's to be screened after all these years.
The DVD release of Patlabor was a huge ripoff. It wasn't digitally remastered, it wasn't anamorphic wide-screen or anything. Even Golgo 13 was remastered and was more enjoyable to look at even though it's a late 70's or early 80's anime film. |

Patlabor has been on my mind recently, and so while I'm by no means a videophile I can respond to this: you're specifically referring to the Manga Video DVD releases of the movies. Remastered editions of the movies were released in the US a few years ago, courtesy of Bandai Visual. They remastered the video, re-recorded the soundtrack, and created new 5.1 audio tracks. For Movie 1, this actually required them to reunite the cast of the film and re-record everything. Completionists such as myself lament the fact that they didn't at least also include the original audio tracks of the movies (or the original English dubs, for that matter), and so some of us have taken the efforts to use the audio tracks from the Manga release and synchronize them with the remastered video to yield four audio tracks total: original Japanese, 5.1 Japanese, original English dub with one cast, and the 5.1 English dub with a totally different cast (the English re-dub is not as well-done). My approach to this was quick and dirty since it's not a straightforward process; for the full she-bang method, ask ANN's own Justin Sevakis. The Bandai Visual limited edition DVDs were by no means cheap; back when we reviewed Movie 1 and Movie 2 we considered it a deal that we paid "only" $60 or something for each Limited Edition release of the films. The LE was worth it because they included two books with each one, fully translated into English: one consisting of the storyboards and another consisting of essays, interviews, sketches, and the like. That was no small effort; when they later released Jin-Roh on Blu-Ray (for about $75...), the book they included with it was left entirely in Japanese and was therefore of little use. In Japan, Blu-Ray releases of the Patlabor movies, OAVs, and even TV series (as of a few months ago) exist. As such, they certainly have the materials to screen the films in a theatrical setting. Unfortunately, that does mean that the English language edition being screened will be the rather plain Bandai Visual version. Still, I do hope people attend these screenings. Like I said in that article I linked at the start, if I had to pick ONE and only one anime title which I believed represented all the best things anime had to offer, Mobile Police Patlabor would probably be it on account of its versatility. I suppose that covers all bases quite aptly. One would support this practice becoming a trend for dual-audio anime screenings. |
