Weren't the US concerts just screenings of the concert's Blu-ray/DVD?

William Gibson is a dumbass and should STFU! Seriously.... Less anime? What? Is this the 80's?

In English? I'd much rather have her subbed than dubbed. Yah Gibson is irrelevant to anime culture and should STFU.

Admittedly, I'm not into the whole cyberpunk genre, so my immediate reaction was "William who?" Basically what he thinks of Miku, who is much more recognizable to me than he is, is pretty meaningless since I don't view him as anyone important. It would be about the same if someone asked me what my views on it are, I guess.

I think he's referring more to the technology itself, but... I won't pretend to understand what he's saying. That being said, telling him to "STFU" for just sharing his is opinion is a little overboard, don't you think?

When will people understand miku is not a 3D hologram!?
I am against this whole shove Miku down in the worlds throat.
Ignorant people will start make fun of Miku and her fans and vriticize them.

Yeah, I take it none of you have understand the significant of William Gibson's work. Did you know without Gibson's work, cyberpunk anime like Ghost in the Shell, Akira, and Bubblegum Crisis would not have existed. So William Gibson doesn't have the right to say whatever he want.

I really don't get this Hatsune Miku thing. It kinda creeps me out.

UPDATE:

"Hatsune Miku is clearly a more complex phenomenon than I initially assumed. Requires further study."

Ouch, so much hostility towards Gibson, someone who's had a bigger impact on the anime industry than Miku ever has (and frankly, any of you ever will). Put into perspective the guy does make a good point. Believe it or not, anime is still a niche form of entertainment and Miku is a smaller niche within that niche. The majority of the people are going to see her as a curiosity, but aren't likely going to take to a singing anime character. Something more realistic looking stands a much better chance of catching on with more people. Now, on the other hand you could point at another cartoony virtual band, Gorillaz, as an example of how it can be done without being realistic, but Gorillaz had major record labels, radio time, established artists (both musically and artistically), and media saturation to support it. Miku only has the internet as far as the world outside of Japan is concerned. Maybe if this English version works out we'll see an attempt made to really push her outside of Japan, but for now Gibson is right and a less anime, more realistic virtual idol has a better chance of appealing to more people.

Anyway, while we're talking about media coverage of Miku Hatsune, Attack of the Show did a short feature on her this past Tuesday in their "What's Up with the World?" segment.

I've still got Idoru sitting on my shelf waiting to be read. it's very relevant to this virtual idol business. I knew Sharon Apple predated it, but I did forget about Key. Still, it's as different from those are they are from each other.

So some random schlubs on the internet are telling one of the greatest cyberpunk authors of all time and a leading mind in the field of computers and AI to STFU about his options on virtual idols.

Brilliant.

Kids, this guy was writing about the internet before there was a public internet and before you were even born. So if anyone needs to.. ahem... STFU... it isn't him.

I know, right?! Egad some kids today. Hell, even I'm a litle on the young side. I first saw GITS and only then later learned of Gibson's work. Neuromancer's a bit dated and even Gibson has written articles on how he would write it different today, but it's still a brilliant take on where technology was going and is now.

I think the quotes should probably be around "English".

Also William Gibson is a stone cold badass and the haters in this thread best step off.

In my opinion, Gibson's books have been getting progressively worse*. The last one was borderline terrible. But I'm still thankful of what he's done, because I'm a huge cyberpunk fan.

*after the Idoru trilogy

While at the same time I agree with Gibson that a more realistic and less cartoony idol would reach a bigger audience, there's nothing wrong with starting with and even later catering to niches. You can have multiple idols for different interests. For those that like cartoons / anime, Miku works fine. Yet there's more of a challenge in making a realistic looking one, especially overcoming the uncanny valley.

And really, I have to admit it's kinda creepy creating virtual idols that are indistinguishable from real people. Hell, there even an eerie surreal quality to Miku here. Then again the way AI tech develops and many other advancements are edging us surprisingly fast toward the technological singularity all these cyberpunk authors talk about.
