For comparison's sake, the new #1 of course is the latest Harry Potter movie with a whopping $14 million on 885 screens. That's like the equivalent of a Ghibli film.

Ehhh, not really. 14 million on 885 screens for opening is a huge hit in Japan, and it does outdo all of Ghibli's stuff (I think, though Howl's Moving Castle may be a bit higher), but the opening weekend per screen average isn't even higher than Umizaru 3's opening weekend.

Harry Potter Deathly Hollows per screen: $15,820
Umizaru 3 per screen: $24,268

I thought the opening box office numbers for HP would be higher than that.

Uh, hang on a second here.

Per-screen average for huge blockbusters that open on 800+ screens are always lower than popular films opening on fewer screens. That's because the bigger film is spread across more screens.

For instance, let's take a look at last weekend's North American box office.

A documentary called "Made in Dagenham" opened on 3 screens. Its per-screen average was $12,521. That's nearly half of the per-screen average Harry Potter made, which opened on a whopping 4,125 screens, to a per-screen average of $30,307.

But it would be completely asinine to say that "oh, Harry Potter's per-screen gross was barely twice as much as "Made in Dagenham". So it isn't that impressive, I expected more".

Pretty simple math here. Popular limited-release movies have much higher per-screen averages over any given weekend frame than whatever the box office winner is that weekend in almost every case.

Just in case you're not getting it, I'd think that 11.3 million on 467 screens (Umizaru 3) is more profitable than 14 million on 885 screens.

Of course, I do not know how much money it costs for a single screen, but something inside me tells me that the 2.7 million more than Harry Potter made does not balance out the extra 418 screens that it had.

Of course, if you focus on the extreme examples of a super-limited release such as the one you cited then such logic does not apply.

But If I'm mistaken in my thoughts, please do tell me. I have honestly no experience in the finances required to make the extra film prints and to rent out the theatre screens, so any added experience/knowledge you have would be quite helpful.

I didn't look at Umizaru 3's opening weekend. If it did 11.3 million on 467 screens in Japan, that's really impressive and a comparable number - in fact it's such a comparable number that I'd say it's as if the per-screen averages you posted are pretty much in line with number of screens versus per screen average based on final opening frame gross!

In the interest of being a dick I will point out that you responded to someone saying "wow those are like Ghibli numbers!" with "ehhh no, it did outgross every Ghibli movie's opening weekend (except Howl's I think but I can't remember)" so the "ehhh no" wasn't really necessary because you weren't correcting what he said, you just wanted to point out that Umizaru 3 did nearly as well on half as many screens.

Well to be honest Zac, Ghibli movies only have around 400~ screens per release too Razz

Take "The Borrowers" (the most recent Ghibli film), it made 10.2 million on 447 screens, or an average of $22,819 per screen.

I probably should have used that example as well. After looking back, it seems Howl didn't beat those numbers, with 13.9 million on 448 screens.

So I guess my "ehhhh no" comes with a doubt of how much the costs of the extra 400+ screens weighs against the slightly higher profits. It most likely wasn't the proper retort to make though.
