Yeah, I also didn't like the 'over-the-top tragic' event in Honey and Clover. Despite crying almost non-stop during volumes 5 onwards (of the manga), I didn't feel anything from this turn of events. Didn't help that I never really liked that character to begin with.
Yamada was actually one of my favourite characters. If I had allowed myself to be forced to watch the anime by my friend (managed to compromise by saying I'd read the manga), I probably would've hated her instead. 3-4 episodes of any character crying is way too much (plus, I hate listening to anime characters cry, it's annoying). At least in the manga the crying doesn't take up whole chapters and it's easy to skip the pages if it starts getting too much =D I also found Takumi's behaviour towards Rika more stalkerish and creepy than caring. Takemoto's bike journey was definitely my favourite part of this series. Hmmm, come to think of it, I would have been happy if the series ended at this point too. Maybe I'll go borrow my friends H&C disks to just watch this part... |

Erin's comments about the Sea Prince and the Fire Child vis a vis showing it to kids have merit, but in case anyone was planning on getting this for their rugrats and are now having second thoughts, I want to add that I totally dug this movie when I was a kid. There are a lot of scenes that were really haunting to my five-year-old self and have stuck with me my whole life! I feel like youngins who love the older, quainter Disney movies and Ghibli could really enjoy it. (It depends on how well they can take sad endings too, of course...)
Erin may be right that it's probably too boring for kids today. Heck, I distinctly remember watching it with some buddies, and during the climax all the little boys got bored and trundled off to have a snack. I remember one of the girls hollering after them, "Oh my gosh, you guys are missing all the BEAUTIFUL stuff!" Well, different strokes, I guess! Oh, and if you're like me and saw this movie as a kid but haven't touched it since then, I really recommend checking it out! I personally think it really holds up- it's definitely not one of those nostalgia movies that seem SO GOOD in your memories but actually sucks. It can be a really lovely, embarrassment-free trip down memory lane! Definitely worth a rental at least.

Gotta say Erin that I agree completely with you on Honey & Clover. The ending to season one is vastly superior to that of season two (also, "part 1"? There's only one "part" to season 2 as far as I know). I also thought that the sudden-bad-thing that happened was just inane in effect, and merely served as a plot device because the author got lazy in the end. For something as off-kilter and unique Honey & Clover had been to that point, I was really let down with the second season.

I loved the Sea Prince and the Fire Child when I was a little girl and was so happy to see it re-released. I won't argue with it being on the Rental Shelf, it does have its flaws, but I will say that my four year old son loves it.
I agree with Myaow that the film really holds up well. I was surprised at how lush and vibrant the background scenery still was. |

Sea Prince is definitely shelf worthy for me. Now, I wasn't yet born when this came out on VHS or Betamax or whatever, but I did see it via youtube a couple years back. I don't see how having romance would necessarily make it boring to kids though, I mean, Disney movies have romance, it's just usually interrupted by song and Sea Prince doesn't do really do that. And the prince and princess (or village wench if you will) only tend to see each other for 5 second before falling in love then spend no more time whatsoever before the wedding whereas in Sea Prince Sirius and Malta, while doing the love at first sight thing, at least spend more time together. And I'm not sure I'd show a kid Cinderella instead, she spends an awful lot of the movie being bossed around and doing chores, I wouldn't exactly call it exciting.
Oh man, and Koichi Sugiyama! Dragon Quest dude! He does the music in Sea Prince! Maybe that's why I took a liking to it and I think I would've liked it as a kid because my favorite Disney movie was Fantasia and not just for the visuals (which is why Fantasia 2000 disappointed me) |

I apologize for the picture quality-I took the pix with my i-phone and it was hard to hold it still to keep the frame in focus. I had to do a little bit of editing to brighten up the pictures/fix the coloring. |

Poor Erin, now she'll wait for "part 2" of Honey & Clover's second season forever.
I had absolutely no problems with H&C's conclusion, open-ended as it is. It's a show about unrequited love, but as the series' beautiful final scene shows, loving someone deeply is something you should be thankful for, whether this person loves you the same way or not. |

I think I confused my editor... It's box set 3, which begins season two, but I only rented the first two discs, so I was trying to call it "box three, season two, part one" but that's kind of weird... |

The episode count for Hayate IS ridiculous because of the price they're charging for so few episodes. My god, some of the discs cost as much as Code Geass or Gundam 00 LEs, the latter which had a couple MORE episodes as well as a dub. Why Bandai feels like over-charging the discs, I'm not sure. Regardless, since the possibility of us getting an ender artbox is 0.000001%, I'm waiting for a boxset release.
I need to finish Honey and Clover, I've got the first set but haven't watched it yet because I want to watch it all at once. But we'll see, most of my money is going to whenever the next FUNi sale is on RightStuf, and then I need to start saving up for ACEN. |

Considering how much I loved Honey & CLover when i first watched it, I'm ashamed at myself for not having picked it up already.
My problem with that plot point was how obviously telegraphed it was that I couldn't help roll my eyes at it a little. That and I thought the song with it was overkill. My favorite moment in the show has to be when the professors dismiss Takemoto's art project, Shuuji puts up that sign, and then they're all fawning over it. |

Isn't Honey and Clover also supposed to be like gutbustingly hilarious? I recall seeing this one montage of all the funny scenes, including spoiler[the dreaded Twister game of death].
In flicks like this (and many cartoons where the parents are an unusual pairing), they usually leave out the details of their mating. Heck, if you want to see a hilarious example of that, you should see Firebreather. Now how a dragon kaiju and tiny human have a kid together is beyond anyone, but I'm sure most of us with dirty minds can piece it together 
On the plus side, dragon-headed king of the sea is epic. |

well said. Hopefully it'll have other series like this soon. Also I am still not buying that Animax Asia's dub of Hayate the combat butler is preety good with their infamous reptuation. Has any dubbers outside of the US, or has anyone have been lucky enough to have EVER watched it before??? Cause when it comes to that , I'll believe that when I see it. |

YMMV. Candice Moore as Maria is the highlight for me. She sounds so much better when she gets to use a British accent. Her "American" accent always seems a little off. I was hoping there were some clips of the Animax Asia dub on YouTube, but all I'm getting is the official promo clips. They're rerunning the first season now, though. Too bad the only video recorder I have is a VCR. |
