It's nearly as fun to read your reviews, Carlos, as it is to read REAL. I love how your eye and your experience bring out an extra depth to these stories.

REAL is easily without question one of my top-3 all-time favorite manga.

The only thing that consistently bugs me about the series is all the main characters in wheelchairs (except one, who seems to have been dropped) are in their chairs due to accidents of one sort or another. And none of them seem to have been born without the use of their lower limbs. That always sticks in my mind as a little bit off, as my daughter (who is in a wheelchair due to spina bifida) and all her friends in wheelchairs have been learning to deal with the world as it presents itself to them from day one. Nine volumes into the series and we haven't met anyone who's been unable to use their legs from birth.

It's also a shame we haven't been able to follow the progress of the one female character in a chair very much at all (not to mention how its a shame that she's the lone woman in a chair in the series, and she's not even a sportsman, so we end up seeing almost none of her strengths).

I'd also like to see a bit more about Japan's cultural attitudes toward people in wheelchairs. In an early volume a journalist decided to dedicate himself to telling the story of wheelchair basketball and I thought that had some real promise, but we haven't seen him in a very long time.

But man ... what the story does provide ... pow! I do love REAL every time, and look forward eagerly to each new volume. (Takahashi's father has become one of my favorite characters.) The art is amazing. His facial expressions are absolutely gorgeous -- nuanced, realistic, and so welcomely varied.

REAL is so good, it just keeps me wanting a bit more.
