My guess is the attention the series has been getting on the media and newer readers wanting to catch up on the older stories.

So there is more people owning volume 61 than 1??
Well guess they already saw the anime/borrowed the other volumes from friends..

Oricon only began reporting its book ranking charts in April of 2008, so it does not include sales data before then.

One Piece fever is phenomenal in Japan, just wow. We are currently looking at the top 30, I wonder how many one piece volume landed on top 100, last week they have 40 volumes all in all. 200 million divided by 61 that's roughly 3.2 million per volume, so it safe to say 2.5 million per volume.
