I hope that another subsidiary will continue to publish its Japanese reference books such as "Japanese for Busy People", "Kanji Learner's Dictionary", "Furigana Japanese Dictionary", just to name a few.

Well, it seemed sort of obsolete to have both Kodansha USA and Kodansha International anyway. Now Kodansha can focus solely on their USA branch.
Kodansha USA started out terribly, but this will be an amazing year for it. Bi-monthly releases? Bloody Monday, Mardock Scramble, Phoenix Wright, newly translated Negima!, etc.? They could definitely become my new favorite company if they keep up the flow. |

For a brief second, I though Kodansha USA was shutting down and that would certainly be news. Not good news, but I imagine that type of news would spread much faster than a wild fire.
But even though a potential problem was avoided, it's a shame those who are still working for Kodansha International will lose their jobs soon. So essentially, those employees have less than 27 days to find new work before Kodansha International is closed down. In some cases, that may also mean finding a new house or other means of residence as well. |

...And Canada, since we do get releases from the States. Ah, there I go, being all nit-picky again... Anyhow, on topic, I'm not really surprised of this. It seems pretty obvious that Kodansa USA will be focusing on a lot of things for overseas now. I don't think it's too much of a loss. At least I hope not. But I do feel bad for those about to lose their jobs too. |

Personally, I think it is a shame that 48 year old company with proven titles (as mentioned by AnimeMaine and the original ANN article) is being closed when Kodansha USA has yet to really prove itself worthy of all this attention.

I'm hoping some of the titles continue to get printed via Kodansha USA. My Japanese Arts professor always uses a book they've been printing for over 20 years (Sendo Tanaka's Tea Ceremony) as a required text for our course on Chado, and I wouldn't doubt they're the publisher of some of the books I'll have to buy for my Japanese Art History class in the fall.
